The current Manchester United side may be devoid of the power of the 94' vintage, the class of the treble-winning 99' incarnation or the world's best player in Cristiano Ronaldo circa 08', but for Eric Cantona they remain top dogs.
The Frenchman spent five glittering years at Old Trafford and became the catalyst for the club's first league title in 26 years when they won the inaugural Premier League season in 1993.
Three more league titles and two FA Cups followed for the controversial striker before 'King Eric' shocked the game by announcing his decision to hang up his boots at the age of just 31.
Cantona remains a keen observer of the goings on at Old Trafford and believes Sir Alex Ferguson's current crop is as good as anything that has gone before.
Question marks, however, remain over a lack of a regular No1, the defensive issues that have seen United concede 21 so far this term, 10 more than rivals Manchester City, and the composition of a midfield that continues to splutter.
But despite the 'issues' United have made serene progress in the Champions League and sit pretty at the top of the league. No wonder then Cantona believes they deserve to rank alongside Ferguson's other great sides.
"Last season United lost the league in the last minute. Sometimes that happens, but they are still a top team and a top team in Europe", Cantona told Inside United.
"They are as strong as years before and it’s great to see Ferguson create a new generation of players. He has spent over 25 years at the club and there have been so many generations. It’s not only generations of players, but generations of people."
And Cantona then revealed that he believes Ferguson, who he often calls a "genius", is just as much a psychologist as a football manager.
"I have said before that the manager is a great psychologist – he is a great example because being a manager is about being a great psychologist.
"I think it’s just as important to be a good psychologist as it is a tactician. Maybe more. And Ferguson is that."
