Benitez tight-lipped on Chelsea move for Ba

Chelsea interim manager Rafael Benitez refused to comment last night on speculation that his club had moved to sign Newcastle striker Demba Ba.

The European champions are looking to take advantage of a 7.5 million (Dh44.5m) clause in the frontman’s contract as they strengthen for the rest of the campaign.

Chelsea are selling Daniel Sturridge to Liverpool and have targeted Ba, who has also been linked with Arsenal.

But Benitez said: “We don’t talk about our business in public. My job is to prepare for the games, enjoy them if we win and then after they (the club) will let me know what is going to happen.”

Benitez would also not be drawn on Frank Lampard’s long-term future after he inspired Chelsea to a 2-1 win at Everton.

“He is under contract. He has shown his full commitment,” he said.

“He is a great player and my job is to keep him fit, happy and scoring goals.”
