Radamel Falcao might be one of the hottest properties in world football but the lethal striker insists he is far from the finished article.
The Colombian has scored 17 goals in just 16 La Liga games for Atletico Madrid this season as Los Rojiblancos have emerged as Barcelona’s closest challengers for the league title.
That form has led to frenzied speculation – firmly denied by both the player and club yesterday – that Falcao could be on his way out of the Vicente Calderon with Manchester City, Chelsea and Real Madrid all touted as possible destinations.
But after committing to Atleti until the summer at least, El Tigre revealed he still felt there was room in his game for improvement. “A major threat would be to think you know it all or have done it all, that’s when you stop evolving or trying to be better,” the Colombian said at the Dubai International Sports Conference.
“That’s a major mistake. Personally I think I still have a lot to learn and want to keep growing.
“After this I want to have trophies but it is something you can only achieve with discipline and hard work.”
While he may be happy to stay with Atleti for the time being, Falcao did reveal a sense of pleasure at being linked with some of the bigger clubs on the continent.
“I feel pride to learn that the work I’ve been doing is acknowledged by other clubs,” he added. “Having said that, this is part of football, I am very happy at my club and I am very calm.”
Perennial underachievers, Atletico are enjoying a fine domestic season and with 17 games gone find themselves second and seven points clear of neighbours Real.
While Falcao has hogged the headlines with his goalscoring feats – which included the league’s first five-goal haul for more than a decade against Deportivo earlier this month – coach Diego Simeone has also won widespread praise.
In 58 games, the Argentine has a win ratio just shy of 70 per cent and has lifted the Europa League and European Super Cup.
Falcao added: “Since he arrived we have improved when it comes to performance of the whole team.
“This has been very important and thanks to him we have achieved the titles.”
