Liverpool table bid for Sneijder - report

Liverpool are the latest club to be linked with a move for out-of-favour Inter Milan playmaker Wesley Sneijder amid claims they have already tabled a bid for the Dutchman.

Sneijder, 28, is widely expected to leave the Giuseppe Meazza in the new year after being jettisoned from the first-team squad this season following a bitter contract dispute.

Reports that Sneijder had agreed personal terms with Tottenham surfaced on Christmas Day, only for his agent to deny that he was on his way to White Hart Lane.

"There is nothing, absolutely nothing true about that," Sneijder's representative told Dutch paper Algemeen Dagblad.

It is now claimed, though, that Sneijder is on his way to England after all with Milan daily Gazzetta dello Sport claiming Liverpool have moved ahead in the race for his signature by tabling a £9.5million deal.

Sneijder is keen to end his Inter nightmare and admitted this past week that it would be "best for everyone" if he left the club in January. Those remarks came after his wife hinted that a move was in the offing by saying she was prepared to "emigrate" after three years in Italy.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has made no secret of his desire to bolster his squad in the upcoming transfer window, with attacking reinforcements his No1 priority.

Rodgers himself revealed last week that he was hoping to do his business early in the window with Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge widely tipped to arrive as is Blackpool's England Under 21 star Tom Ince.

But it is the possible signature of Sneijder that will really capture the Kop's imagination with the Dutchman regarded as a genuine world class talent.

For so long tipped as Paul Scholes' natural successor at Manchester United, Sneijder would represent a real coup for Liverpool who still harbour ambitions of gatecrashing the Champions League places this season despite their inconsisent form.

Sneijder's wage demands could yet prove problematic for the Reds, but with the player opening seeking an escape route from Milan and Liverpool crying out for a box office signing to galvanise their young squad, it's a deal that would make perfect sense. On paper at least.
