Atleti chief Marin fears a fight to hold on to Falcao

Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin says they could be powerless to stop Radamel Falcao leaving the club at the end of the season.

The frontman told a Dubai audience last night that he has no intention of leaving in January. While Marin insisted there was no immediate pressure to cash in, he warned that could change should the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea or Real Madrid use their considerable financial clout.

Asked if Falcao would leave in January, Marin said: “100 per cent no, Falcao belongs to Atletico. At the end of the season we will talk to the player and we agreed when he came to Atletico in that same moment if he decided it’s better for his career and family to go out then I will help him.

“Atletico now can pay a salary, it’s a high salary for me, but it’s a regular salary for a top player.

“If for example he received at the end of the season some proposals from the two, three, four higher clubs it’s not possible to give him more.

"I prefer he remains with me, I don’t need to sell the rights of Radamel, but he’s human and if you receive a proposal with seven times your salary I am sure you would decide to go. In January he will remain with us. I hope he decides to remain with me next summer.”

Falcao, scorer of 17 goals in 16 league matches this season, had said earlier: “The current situation is that I have three years on my Madrid contract. I have had a great season with the squad and my aim is to finish my contract.

“The club has made major efforts for me to stay, at the moment, I’m only thinking of my team’s objectives and personal objectives. I am very happy with the club.”
