West Ham appear to have given up hope of keeping on-loan Liverpool striker Andy Carroll, and have made an approach for Sevilla's Alvaro Negredo, according to the Daily Star.

The Hammers have been keen to land Carroll on a permanent basis beyond his loan spell this season, but it has been hinted by his team-mate Kevin Nolan that he would prefer to be playing European football.

The 24-year-old is also wanted by Newcastle and Monaco, and surely has no future at Anfield following some poor form since arriving at the club for £35million.

Nolan said: "Andy is a clever lad, he knows he has got to play football.

"If he gets offered a club in the Champions League or the Europa League, then he has got to make the decision.

"I know he has enjoyed his time here, you can see that on the pitch. He gets on well with all the lads, so we will see what happens."

West Ham have been preparing other options in case they do not sign Carroll, and have apparently made an approach to Sevilla for striker Negredo, who has also been linked with Tottenham.

The 27-year-old has previously admitted an ambition to play in the Premier League, and came close to joining Everton in January. However, he seems likely to reject West Ham and wait for a better offer to come along.

The Hammers have also been linked with Peter Crouch of Stoke City, and a loan move for Chelsea youngster Romelu Lukaku.
