Fernando Torres Should Remain with Chelsea Next Season

Fernando Torres has had a strange career with Chelsea, but he has proven in recent weeks that he deserves to remain with the club.

The forward had been considered a major disappointment after coming over from Liverpool for an incredible £50 million. At that point, he was known as one of the best goalscorers in the world and always had a knack for finding the back of the net.

Unfortunately, he only managed six goals during the 2011-12 English Premier League season. This season, he barely improved on that mark with eight scores.

This had fans complaining about his lack of an impact. There were certainly times where you would forget that he was even on the pitch.

However, Torres proved in the past month that he comes through when it is the most important. In 14 continental matches in the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League, he led the squad with nine goals.

Additionally, he saved his goals for the biggest moments of the season. The Spanish player gave his side an early advantage with a nice score in the finals of the Europa League against Benfica in a match Chelsea won 2-1. He also had the game-winning goal against Everton on the final day of the league season to help the club clinch third place.

Counting all competition, no one on Chelsea had more goals this season than Torres. While there were some struggles against EPL opponents, the talent is still there for him to be very successful.

The issue is that the club appears ready to give up on the player, according to Rob Beasley of The Sun:

Chelsea are set to take a £30 million hit and sell Fernando Torres this summer.

Incoming boss Jose Mourinho wants a new-look attack and hopes to splash £70m on Napoli star Edinson Cavani and Bayer Leverkusen’s Andre Schurrle.

Of course, Torres does not want to go anywhere. According to Matt Law of Mirror Football, he recently said:

My decision to come to Chelsea has been vindicated by the medals I have won. Not everything has been as bad as people have said. I am happy for this season and winning trophies with Chelsea, that’s what I wanted to do when I joined.

I am feeling more important than in the past, so I think the future will be even better. When you are involved and you feel you are an important part of the team, you feel much better.

It is hard to deny the level of team success that has followed Torres in his career. BBC Sport points out exactly what the player has accomplished as a part of Chelsea and the Spanish national team:

While he is certainly inconsistent, his presence usually leads to success. It makes no sense for the club to get rid of a player of this caliber while also giving up on a lot of money.

Chelsea is the type of club that expects to win trophies every season. The fans want the roster to be filled with the best players in the world to do what it takes to bring in championships.

Despite his faults, Torres is one of those players and he should remain with the club heading into next season.
