Moyes begins life at Man Utd with plenty to ponder

David Moyes has wasted little time in getting on with job at hand after arriving at Manchester United's Carrington training ground on Monday - day after Sir Alex Ferguson bid a fond farewell after 26-and-a-half years in charge.

Despite not offiicially taking up the post until July 1, Moyes arrived at United HQ at 9am this morning as he begins the uneviable task of replacing the most successful manager in British football history.

Moyes was due to meet United players and staff at Carrington for the first time in order to outline his plans for the future.

Top of the agenda for the 50-year-old, who signed a six-year deal with the club earlier this month, will be to sort out the future of star striker Wayne Rooney who has asked to leave.

It is understood the 27-year-old could be persuaded to stay provided Moyes gives him assurances of his future role in the side with Rooney's transfer request stemming from a breakdown in relations with Ferguson.

Also of pressing concern for Moyes will be the makeup of his backroom staff next season. Current United assistant Mick Phelan is likely to depart, although first-team coach Rene Meulensteen - a hugely popular and respected figure among the players - is expected to remain.

Moyes' assistant at Everton, Steve Round, could join the Scot at United, as could long-time coach Jimmy Lumsden and ex-United player Phil Neville, who enjoys a close relationship with Moyes from their time at Goodison Park.

Ryan Giggs could also be given a coaching role after talks with Moyes and Ferguson last week, although the Welshman has expressed his desire to continue playing after penning a new one-year deal earlier this year.

Also up for discussion will be transfer targets with the club likely to strengthen in the summer despite incoming chief executive Ed Woodward insisting their would not be wholesale changes.

Moyes has already been linked with a raid on former side Everton with Leighton Baines, Ross Barkley and Marouane Fellaini all linked with moves to Old Trafford.

Moyes signed off his 11 years at Everton with defeat at Chelsea on Sunday, and after admitting he probably took the club as far as he could, he concedes he will be a busy man over the next week or two as he clears out his desk and begins a new chapter of his career at United.

"I'll probably be doing two jobs for the next week or so," he said. "I'll go into Finch Farm [Everton's training ground] some of the days next week and make sure everything's in place for whoever the incoming manager is.

"Most of it is anyway, but I'll just make sure that everything's as ready as I can leave it."

Meanwhile, as United bid farewell to Ferguson, top scorer Robin van Persie admits there is already a sense of excitment among the United players at the prospect of working with Moyes.

"Everybody wants to work for each other and share the success and I'm 100 per cent sure that we will play for trophies every year and, hopefully, win a few every year. That's our standard for this team," he said.

"Of course, we get a new manager next year and everybody is looking forward to that. It's a new challenge for everyone. We'll have a nice break now and then we go again."
