Board meeting to decide Mourinho's Real Madrid fate

Jose Mourinho's future at Real Madrid is expected to become clearer later on Monday when the club's directors meet to discuss a season described by the Portuguese as the worst of his career.

While a Madrid spokesman said he had "no idea" what would be discussed at the meeting, top of the agenda is likely to be Mourinho's future after the club's trophyless campaign dominated by talk of dressing room unrest.

Defeat to city rivals Atletico in last Friday's Copa del Rey final was yet another stain against Mourinho's reputation with the derby loss Madrid's first in 14 years.

Mourinho continues to insist a decision over his future has not been made, although it is widely assumed his three-year tenure will come to an end sooner rather than later with a return to former club Chelsea expected.

"I have a contract for three more years and I have still not sat down with the president to talk about my future," he said. "I have to be honest. Until the day that the president sits down with me and the club does something official, it has to be like this."

However, there have been reports that Madrid's hierarchy may decide to relieve Mourinho of his duties before the season's end, although the hefty pay-off the Portuguese would be entitled to could yet scupper that.

Despite the uncertainty, Madrid have already made their move to find a successor for the Portuguese after lodging an official approach for Paris Saint-Germain boss Carlo Ancelotti.

While their request was turned down by PSG, Ancelotti has since confirmed his desire to quit the Parc des Princes for the Bernabeu, although the newly-crowned French champions are still hoping to convince the Italian to stay.

"My wish is to leave the club," said Ancelotti, 53, after meeting PSG club president Nasser al-Khelaifi. "I have asked the club to leave. We are going to wait for a response from the club who are going to take a few days to decide."

But al-Khelaifi insisted that Ancelotti, who this season led PSG to a first title since 1994, is going nowhere. "He said that he wanted to leave for Real Madrid. I said it's not possible because he has a contract for another year - that is our decision," al-Khelaifi told www.beinsport.fr.
