EXCLUSIVE: Luis Suarez may be the latest hero to have his name chanted from the Anfield terraces, but another Liverpool favourite believes he still ranks higher than the Uruguayan.
A hat-trick from Suarez in the 4-0 win over Wigan on Saturday evening took him to the top of the Premier League scoring charts with 21 goals. The 26-year-old has been lauded throughout the current season for a succession of spell-binding performances, even throughout periods of mediocrity for Liverpool.
Club captain Steven Gerrard, who has played with a host of top-class strikers during his career, previously stated that Suarez is the best he’s played with, while manager Brendan Rodgers has been constant in his praise of the former Ajax man.
Suarez may now be earning plaudits as one of the Europe’s finest strikers, but Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler believes he remains the ultimate Kop King.
“I'm obviously going to say I'm the best,” Fowler told Sport360. “My record stands up to the best of them at Liverpool, I'll always back myself.”
Fowler is regarded as a genuine Liverpool legend, spending eight years at his boyhood club, before returning for a solitary season in 2006. During his time at Anfield, Fowler scored 183 goals in 369 appearances and was given the nickname ‘God’ by the Kop faithful.
The former England striker admits that he was spoilt when it came to strike partners compared to the company Suarez currently finds himself in, but regardless, still feels he comes out on top.
“I was not a bad player myself but I was in good hands because of the strikers I've played with like Ian Rush, Michael Owen, and Fernando Torres, just to name a few,” Fowler added. “The history of Liverpool shows we've always had (good) strikers. We're all good players who have had good careers.
“It's hard to pinpoint (who is the best of me or Suarez), but being me and who I am, I'm always going to back myself.”
Fowler is satisfied with the way the season has been going for Liverpool after a turbulent start to the campaign. Like many Kop fans, he remains realistic of the club’s short-term ambitions, but is convinced Brendan Rodgers is the right man to return to the club to its former glory days.
“I think Brendan Rodgers would be the first to admit that they can't compete with Man City, Chelsea and Man United because of the money,” Fowler said. “I know he's spent a bit, but each week Liverpool are getting better.
“I know they had a blip in the FA Cup and in the Europa League, but their form has been getting better and they have become a much better side to watch, while their results of in the league have been improving.”
Fowler added: “I think the club's in good hands because Brendan is a fantastic manager, and in my eyes he's the right man.”
