Chelsea's Juan Mata has handed his support to Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas, saying the Portuguese manager could succeed at any club, amid reports linking him with a move to Real Madrid.

The former Blues boss, who brought Mata to the Premier League from Valencia at the start of last season, had a torrid time at Stamford Bridge but has since enjoyed a far greater level of success in north London.

Spurs are currently in contention for a top four finish in the Premier League this term and have reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League and Spaniard Mata has backed Villas-Boas to achieve elsewhere too.

'He’s able to train any team,' said Mata.

'He’s a great coach; modern and young but with experience and qualifications, although his time at Chelsea did not go well at all.'

Meanwhile, the playmaker has refused to be drawn on speculation linking Jose Mourinho with a return to Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.

The current Real Madrid boss has repeatedly been the subject of rumours stating he will replace Blues interim boss Rafael Benitez in the summer.

'They (Chelsea) keep fond memories of Mourinho. They did very well, won titles and the fans will keep a great memory,' Mata added.

'But today Mourinho is the coach of Real Madrid and Benitez of Chelsea. We have to be focused on that.'

The Blues travel to Southampton in the Premier League next Saturday, as they continue to chase Manchester City for second place, before hosting Manchester United in their FA Cup quarter-final replay on Easter Monday.
