Blues Out in the Cold: Five Top Chelsea Talents Who Haven’t Been Given Chance to Prove Themselves

Stamford Bridge SnowTime for these Stamford Bridge youngsters to move on to prevent being frozen out permanently.

Marin QPR

Marko Marin

The German international was a wanted man during his Werder Bremen pomp, impressing in Champions League action and representing his country at the 2010 World Cup.

Then he got the chance to secure a move to Stamford Bridge and he took it gladly. The pint sized winger agreed a deal in April last year but before he had even got a chance to prove himself in the first team the West London side had purchased a number of players who effectively curtailed his Chelsea career before it even began.

In came Eden Hazard and Victor Moses and pretty much left Marin out in the cold. Life at Chelsea must be very frustrating for a player that cost £7m.

Thus far he has been handed one solitary Premier League start and that lasted a little less than an hour, in fact Marin has been an unused sub on 19 occasions and has subsequently lost his place in the national team set-up and knows only a move away from Chelsea this summer would give him any hope of a spot in Joachim Low's 2014 World Cup squad.

Thibaut Courtois

Thibaut Courtois

Young Belgian keeper is universally considered one of the hottest young prospects in European football and perhaps the best custodian of his generation. However the 20 year old hasn't even played a senior match for the Chelsea side he signed for back in July 2011.

We are talking about a player with seven national team caps who has been one of the stars of La Liga over the past 18 months. Now into his second season long loan at Atletico Madrid there is every chance the former Racing Genk player will wish to make the temporary move a permanent one.

In his first season at the Vicente Calderon Courtois collected 23 clean sheets in 52 appearances and helped Diego Simeone's side to a Europa League crown, this season he has helped push Los Rojiblancos to mount a genuine challenge to city rivals Real Madrid, now sitting just one point behind the Bernabeu side having been above them for much of the current campaign, this whilst collecting another 18 clean sheets in 32 matches.

Now whilst one can see why Chelsea would still see the excellent Czech Republic keeper Petr Cech as their first choice, why would they deem it necessary to loan out Courtois for a second spell given that their back-up options include the decidedly average Ross Turnbull and the ridiculously inept Hilario?

Bizarre.

Kevin De Bruyne Werder Bremen Chelsea

Kevin De Bruyne

Another Belgian talent the 21 year old attacker was signed by Chelsea back in January 2012 and immediately loaned back to Genk to complete the campaign.

The £7m joined Chelsea for their pre-season tour of North America and was then sent out on loan to Werder Bremen where he has been an instant hit. Indeed De Bruyne is one of the Bundesliga's top assist makers and is now being hotly pursued by a number of German top tier sides, with speculation rife that he will used as a makeweight in the club's pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen youngster Andre Schurrle.

De Bruyne told Chelsea's official website that moving to Stamford Bridge "is a dream but now I have to work hard to achieve the level that's necessary.", the problem is, will he ever even get the chance? It seems unlikely. Not least because there are a host of talents, and young ones at that, already ahead of him in the queue, which begs the question, why was he signed in the first place?

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Chelsea v Aston Villa - Stamford Bridge

Jeffrey Bruma

The young Dutchman moved to Chelsea as a 15 year old back in 2007 and progressed well through the ranks before given his first team nod with a Premier League debut in October 2009, by the following July he had won his first Dutch national team cap, things were going well.

A loan spell at Leicester City led to a season long loan deal with Hamburg where former Chelsea head scout Frank Arnesen clearly felt he could make an impact. Bruma has impressed in the Bundesliga and may well elect to accept a permanent move to the Imtech Arena.

Some may have felt that Bruma was being groomed to be a long term replacement for John Terry but the signing of Gary Cahill and David Luiz clearly left the youngster with little hope of being given a run in the Chelsea first-team and now at the age of 21, also with hopes of making a renewed push to cement a spot in the Dutch national team under Louis Van Gaal, he could well feel it safer to opt for regular first team football elsewhere.

Lukaku sunderland

Romelu Lukaku

Arguably of the five players mentioned Romelu Lukaku is the one most likely to still have a possible future at Stamford Bridge though this summer will prove a crucial one for the powerful Belgian forward.

Having been brought in from Anderlecht for a huge fee, the deal could run up to £17m, Lukaku was afforded a decent opportunity to prove himself under Andre Villas-Boas, the former Blues boss handed the teenager seven appearances before he was axed in March, Roberto Di Matteo gave the forward a grand total of two appearances once he took over.

Lukaku was then sent out on loan to join former Blues hero Steve Clarke at West Brom and has proven to be a massive success, scoring 13 Premier League goals thus far this season, incidentally a tally higher than anyone in Chelsea's first team set-up.

This run of form could lead to a welcoming back to the Chelsea fold next season but it may not.

Even with Fernando Torres struggling for form and with Daniel Sturridge being offloaded to Liverpool, all the talk of possible attacking additions revolved chiefly around Roman Abramovich opening his chequebook and chasing the likes of Edinson Cavani and Radamel Falcao.

So clearly if any big name striker is signed, and with Demba Ba to boot, a Lukaku return would almost certainly entail a spell warming the bench, perhaps even a lengthy spell doing so. No wonder the in-form striker has already started to talk up the possibility of a second spell at the Baggies.

The long and short of it is that Chelsea have a massive squad and one that is not compatible with UEFA's Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules and as such the chances these five have of making an impact at Stamford Bridge are fairly minimal because Abramovich has to greatly reduce his playing staff and those who had previously not had a look in may well be the first to be set free and in the case of these five it's an exit that would surely be preferable to more time spent at a club that doesn't appear to value them.
