With the potential madness of transfer deadline day taking over at WAGNH, we decided to let this interview with John Obi Mikel go until later in the day. Mikel has been in fine form at the Africa Cup of Nations, and has been one of the major factors in them reaching the quarterfinal round in which they will face the Ivory Coast. Unfortunately for Mikel, he won't be able to take part in that tie due to yellow card accumulation in the group stage.
Mikel had a few words for Colin Udoh yesterday about missing the upcoming contest, and he's clearly disappointed by that turn of events:
"I found out last night and I am so so upset about it. I was really looking forward to helping the team get past this game."
"I'm very disappointed to miss the game. But I am confident that the lads can do the job without us".
"We have a good team here and the new players are working very hard. I have tried to take some responsibility and speak to them, motivate them and give them advice. I am sure they will do the country proud."
The good news is that Mikel will be well rested when he returns should Nigeria lose this game, and there would seem to be very little risk of him suffering an injury from the bench as he watches his Chelsea teammates (and ex-teammates). It's unfortunate for his country though, as they clearly are a much better team with Mikel in the lineup than they are without him on the pitch.
It's unfortunate that Mikel will have to miss out on a game that he clearly wants to play in, but best of luck to Victor Moses, kenneth Omeruo, DIdier Drogba, and Salomon Kalou who will all be eligible to take part. It should be a fun game to watch for Chelsea fans regardless of Mikel's absence, as their should be plenty of other Chelsea players and legends on the pitch.
