Chelsea have earmarked a possible summer move to lure veteran German manager Jupp Heyneckes to replace Rafa Benitez at the Stamford Bridge helm according to the Daily Express.

The Blues are putting together a short-list of possible contenders for the post and in many ways 67 year old could be the ideal man for the post.

The Bayern Munich boss is apparently disappointed at being 'retired' from his Allianz Arena post ahead of Pep Guardiola's arrival at the end of the season and has no intention of calling it a day, with Schalke as well as Chelsea eyeing up a move for the well traveled boss.

Given that recent seasons have seen much speculation about 'player power' being the reason why new manager's fail to last the distance Russian owner Roman Abramovich may opt to bring in an old statesman who he knows will not stand for the behaviour of players undermining his role.

Heyneckes is known for his fiery temperament and has an impressive managerial CV.

The former German national team striker is in his third stint in charge of Bayern Munich and seems set to guide them to a third Bundesliga title. During his one season in charge with Real Madrid he helped the Spanish side to the 1997/98 Champions League title.
