Chelsea & Man City target 'aiming' for Atletico stay

Radamel Falcao insists he is not thinking about a big money move to the Premier League, with Chelsea and Manchester City waiting to pounce, and instead remains committed to seeing out his contract with Atletico Madrid.

The Colombian striker has been heavily linked with a January move to England following his stunning goalscoring exploits in the Spanish capital with Atletico.

Chelsea are among the 26-year-old's admirers after witnessing first hand his devastating finishing ability during their 4-1 loss to Atletico in the UEFA Super Cup when Falcao bagged a sensational first-half hat-trick.

Chelsea interim boss Rafael Benitez did little to quell speculation that a January bid was imminent when he admitted last week he was keen on bringing a striker to Stamford Bridge in the new year.

City have also been mooted as a possible destination for Falcao with Roberto Mancini flying to Madrid to watch the player in action earlier in the campaign and reports of a subsequent meeting with the player's agent, Jorge Mendes.

But speaking at the Dubai International Sports Conference on Saturday, Falcao insists he is only thinking about Atleti, with whom he has a contract until 2016.

Praising the "major efforts" the club made to ensure he stayed at the Vicente Calderon this season, he said: "The current situation is that I have three years on my Madrid contract. I have had a great season with the squad and my aim is to finish my contract.

"The club have made major efforts for me to stay, at the moment I'm only thinking of my team's objectives and personal objectives. I am very happy with the club."

Atleitco's well-documented financial issues and a buy-out clause of €48million could yet see the ex-Porto man heading for pastures new at the end of the season, a point he acknowledged. "I don’t know what will happen in the future," he added.

For the time being though, it appears almost certain Falcao, who has a remarkable 56 goals to his name in just 66 appearances for Atletico, will remain the Spanish capital past January as he looks to fire his side into the Champions League.

Diego Simeone's men are currently second in the table, nine points behind runaway leaders Barcelona, but seven clear of city rivals, Real Madrid, in third.
