England goalkeeper Jack Butland has reportedly rejected a move to European champions Chelsea from cash-strapped Birmingham.
Claims that Chelsea have had a £3.5million bid for the 19-year-old rejected appear wide of the mark, although it appears Butland is not currently keen on the move to Stamford Bridge anyway.
Butland was a member of England’s Euro 2012 squad last summer and excelled for the Great Britain team at the Olympics. However, he has only established himself as first-choice for Birmingham this summer and appears reluctant to move to a bigger club where he is unlikely to play.
Petr Cech remains undisputed No.1 at Stamford Bridge with Hilario and Ross Turnbull in reserve. Neither is seen as a long-term successor to Cech but Butland’s claim to that role would also be far from certain. Chelsea also own Belgium international Thibaut Courtois, who has earned rave reviews in 18 months on loan at Atletico Madrid.
However, it is believed a move for Butland, who has also been linked to Southampton and Newcastle, could be revived if Chelsea are prepared to allow the goalkeeper to return to Birmingham for the rest of the season.
