Sir Alex Ferguson 'convinced' Mark Clattenburg is innocent

• Ferguson: 'I refuse to believe it'
• Mark Clattenburg accused of racially abusing Mikel John Obi

Sir Alex Ferguson is "convinced" that the referee Mark Clattenburg is innocent of the racial slurs Chelsea allege were aimed at Mikel John Obi during Manchester United's 3-2 win at Stamford Bridge last Sunday.

United's manager said: "I don't believe Mark Clattenburg would make any comments like that. I refuse to believe it. I think it is unthinkable in the modern climate. I just don't believe it – simple as that. There is no way a referee would stoop to that, I am convinced of that."

On Wednesday Chelsea dropped an allegation that Clattenburg had used "inappropriate language" towards Juan Mata but did lodge an official complaint with the Football Association regarding Mikel.

Along with the FA, the Metropolitan police are pursuing their own separate investigation into the claim that Clattenburg used "inappropriate language" towards Mikel which is alleged to be of a racist nature. It is understood that the official strenuously denies any wrongdoing.
