Report: Brazilian attacker deep in negotiations to join Chelsea in January

Reports out of Brazil this morning indicate that Chelsea are close to adding yet another Brazilian to their squad. The target in question is a new one, at least as far as the rumor mill is concerned. Supposedly, Taison has flown to London to hammer out the final details of a move to Chelsea, with his Ukranian team now on winter break. The Daily Mail had linked us to Taison once before, setting the rumored transfer fee at £12 million.

Taison is 24 years old, and he currently plays for Metalist Kharkiv. He was one of the better players in the Ukrainian Premier league last season, leading the attack that led to a third place finish for Metalist. He'd cerrtainly be a different sort of player than guys like Jozy Altidore or Bony WIlfried, but he's an interesting option to consider that would likely come at a fairly low price.

Taison is a solid player, but I sincerely doubt that the club is looking at him as a long term starter. Instead, he'd seem a very logical replacement for a guy like Daniel Sturridge, someone that can fill a number of roles for the club and allow us to play several different shapes. I'd be shocked a Taison move ended our pursuit of other center forwards, unless of course the plan (fingers crossed) is to recall Romelu Lukaku. January 1 is coming, so I'd expect the rumor mill to continue pumping out new links. Stay tuned...
