Chelsea are said to be ready to test Feyenoord's resolve in January by lodging a £5million bid for their contract rebel captain Stefan de Vrij.
Holland international De Vrij has blossomed into one of the most exciting defenders in Europe in recent seasons, having broken into the Feyenoord side aged just 17.
Now 20 years old, De Vrij has recently taken over the captain's armband at Feyenoord, following the sale of Ron Vlaar to Aston Villa, but is refusing to lead by example when it comes to committing to the club.
The Rotterdam outfit have twice put a contract in front of De Vrij, but he has twice snubbed the opportunity to sign on, insisting that he needs to understand the long-term vision at Feyenoord before he puts pen-to-paper.
It's a move that has increasingly frustrated Feyenoord technical director Martin Van Geel, who is said to have privately urged the club's board to consider selling the player if they can't reach a compromise soon.
There is likely to be no shortage of takers, given that Arsenal, Newcastle and Sunderland are just a few of the names who have been to watch the centre-half in recent months.
But it's Chelsea who hold the most substantial interest in De Vrij, and they're believed to be ready to test the water with a £5million bid in January, to try and prise the prospect away.
De Vrij is currently contracted to Feyenoord until 2014.
