Chelsea attempt to patch up Mark Clattenburg row during secret meeting

Chelsea took a step towards repairing their relationship with Mark Clattenburg by holding secret peace talks with the referee at the National Football Centre.

It is understood Blues chairman Bruce Buck travelled to St George's Park in Burton to speak to Clattenburg and 15 of his elite referee colleagues in a bid to smooth over the damage that had been done by the club's false accusation of racial abuse.

The Football Association deemed that Clattenburg had no case to answer following the Blues' complaint that he called midfielder Jon Obi Mikel a 'monkey'.

Now, despite Clattenburg's colleagues urging him to demand an apology and compensation from Chelsea for their damaging claim, the north east official is keen to draw a line under the incident and is said to have even discussed the possibility of refereeing again at Stamford Bridge in the near future.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore and referees' chief Mike Riley were also present at the meeting.
