José Mourinho hints at Madrid departure and return to Chelsea

• 'I want to be where people love me,' says Mourinho
• Real eliminated from Champions League by Dortmund

José Mourinho has given the clearest indication yet that he will leave Real Madrid for Chelsea at the end of the season. Asked directly if he would be at the Bernabéu next season, having watched his side go out 4-3 on aggregate to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League semi-final, Mourinho said: "Maybe not."

The Portuguese coach, whose relationship with some supporters, players and the media, has been fraught in Spain, said he wants to be "where people love me". He added: "I know I am loved in England. I am loved by some clubs, especially one." The contrast with Spain could not be any greater.

Madrid were knocked out in the last-four stage for the third successive season after a 2-0 second-leg victory was not enough to overturn a 4-1 defeat in the first leg and, unlike last season, Mourinho did not take the opportunity to announce that he would continue. Instead he revealed that he intends to see out the season and then discuss his future with Madrid's president, Florentino Pérez. That discussion is more about the way he departs than whether he goes at all.

Mourinho had avoided commenting on his future over the past few months as speculation grew that he was planning to walk away but he also avoided committing himself to the club beyond the end of the season, even though he has a contract until 2016. On Tuesday he dropped an extremely heavy hint that his future lies at Stamford Bridge.

Stopped by ITV in the television interview area after Madrid's knock out, Mourinho was asked if he would be at Madrid next season. He replied: "Maybe not," adding: "I want to be where people love me to be." That remark, cut short by the need to give way to an advert break, was quickly picked up on and the Portuguese was quizzed again about his future when he reached the post-match press conference.

Asked if he would be back to try to win the Champions League with Real Madrid, Mourinho replied: "It's not important. What's important is that Madrid achieve that."

At one stage he also said: "I am here to talk about the game so, if you want to talk about that, go ahead." But he was soon drawn on his future and, while he claimed not to have made up his mind, there was a strong suggestion that he already knows where he will be next season. The basis of an agreement is already in place at Chelsea, although there have also been discussions with Paris Saint-Germain.

"I want to think [about my future] at the end of the season," Mourinho said. "Obviously I like to be where people love me without reservations, where I have support from everyone. But what matters is Madrid. They are much more important than me."

"I have not made a decision yet because I have a contract. So that is why I want to play the [Copa del Rey] final, finish the season, finish second [in the league] and at the end of the season I will talk to Florentino Pérez, my president and my friend, and we will decide what is best."

"I know that in England I am loved by the fans and by the media, which treats me in a fair way – criticising me when they have to but giving me credit when I deserve it. I know I am loved by some clubs, especially one, and in Spain the situation is a bit different because some people hate me," Mourinho continued, adding with a smile: "And many of you are in this room."

"It is difficult to make a decision because I like the club, I like the president and we made a fantastic team that is ready to [achieve] big things. So it is hard but I need to be honest and fair and at the end of the season we will speak."

Mourinho has had confrontations with players and media in Spain. His relationship with Madrid's captain Iker Casillas has broken down and Pérez was reportedly warned in January that, if Mourinho continued next season, a number of first team players would leave. Although he has wrestled for control of the dressing room, his position has become increasingly unsustainable.

Mourinho has felt like the victim of a press campaign with much of the media turning upon him, often viciously so, in the last few months. He cannot have failed to ask himself what lies beneath that campaign at a club where leaks to the media are often strategic and from the top.

Real Madrid have a Copa del Rey final still to come against city rivals Atletico Madrid but the league was virtually conceded to Barcelona before Christmas and, with Madrid trailing by eleven points, the Catalans could tie up the title this weekend.

At best, Mourinho's three-year balance at the Bernabéu will read: two Copa del Rey successes and one record-breaking league title. Mourinho has now won the league in Spain, Italy, Portugal and England but if he does depart he will do so having failed to add his ultimate goal: a unique third European Cup with three different clubs.

"[Madrid had] a period of not even reaching the quarters, losing credibility and losing [their status as a] seed. Now we have recovered that and reached three semi-finals," Mourinho said. "But Madrid doesn't live off the 'almost' and nor do I. These are three great seasons economically for the club and for prestige too, but Madrid have not won the competition and they have to. When? I don't know. If it's with me, perfect. If not, fine.

"My culture is not being satisfied with not winning the competition. No. No, not at all. But every person who has ever been at Real Madrid, even if it was only for one day, will always say that it was worth it. They will always be able to say: I was at the biggest and most important club in the world."

Bayern Munich fired up by pain of Chelsea Champions League defeat

Bayern Munich boss Jupp Heynckes says the heartbreaking defeat to Chelsea in last season's Champions League final has helped steel his men for this campaign.

Bayern were beaten on penalties by the Blues 11 months ago in their own back-yard in Munich. Tomorrow night, Bayern face Barcelona in the Nou Camp armed with a 4-0 semi-final, first leg advantage and are favourites to make the showpiece final at Wembley next month.

Heynckes said: 'When you experience a final like we did against Chelsea, then you understand all the consequences.

'Some clubs give up but everyone at Bayern reacted in a positive way. We made changes, signed good players and strengthened the team spirit.'

But despite their 4-0 advantage, Heynckes insisted his side still have a job to do at the Nou Camp and said they are keen to show last week's drubbing wasn't a fluke.

'We have to take into account the rival. We have our philosophy on football and this season we have proved that Bayern is a great team playing top quality football. We have our culture and we are capable of scoring goals tomorrow at the Camp Nou,' he added.

'We can’t think too much about the first-leg result. After the match we can evaluate things, but I cannot say which team is the better one. Barcelona have played at such a high level for so many years. Bayern want to prove that the match in Munich wasn’t a one-off.'

Juan Mata vs. Eden Hazard: Revealing Stats to Separate the Chelsea Pair

Eden Hazard and Juan Mata are two of the most dangerous offensive threats in the Premier League, rightly recognised by their peers who voted them into the recent PFA Team of the Year.

For Chelsea, they take up two of the three attacking berths behind a lone striker and are integral aspects of their side's approach, especially in the final third.

Aside from occupying similar roles and coincidentally standing at exactly 170 centimetres tall, it's interesting to note just how alike much of their Premier League production has been this season.

Having spent a similar amount of minutes on the pitch, both players have unleashed 60 shots, with Mata scoring 10 goals to Hazard's nine. Each of them passes at 85 percent accuracy and have amazingly managed an almost identical haul of passes in the final third—with Hazard making 831 to Mata's 828.

Away from attack, they have been dribbled past the same amount of times (24), while their tackling and dispossession numbers are also bizarrely close.

Therefore, in an effort to separate them for those not entirely in tune with the impressive Chelsea duo, here's a statistical look at where they do differ on the pitch—only considering their Premier League input.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is 'afraid' of what Chelsea can do in the transfer market, especially if Jose Mourinho returns

Arsene Wenger has said he is "afraid" of what Chelsea can do in the this summer's transfer market, and that former manager Jose Mourinho "would be a good solution" for the London club.

~ - Premier League RSS Feed ~

Four months in the making: Ferguson already planning Man Utd signings

Never one to rest on his laurels Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he has been planning the club's transfer activity this summer for the past four months.

A little over a week after sealing a 20th league title and 13th of his 26 year reign at Old Trafford, Ferguson is already thinking of bolstering his squad for the challenges that lie ahead in 2014.

It is promising to an an interesting close season, with Chelsea definitely in the market for a new manager and City potentially so if owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nayhan believes Roberto Mancini has failed to deliver the improvement he is looking for.

Even if Mancini remains, it would seem more likely than not City will be looking to bolster their squad following a failure to keep pace with United. And Chelsea certainly will if, as Ferguson suspects, Jose Mourinho returns to Stamford Bridge.

However, the Red Devils chief has already started his work as he looks to bring in at least two more additions to his title-winning squad.

England Under-21 wide-man Wilfried Zaha was signed from Crystal Palace in January, then immediately loaned back to the Championship outfit for the remainder of the campaign.

Interest in strikers Robert Lewandowski and Radamel Falcao is long-standing, whilst it is also believed United will be in the hunt for a central midfielder and a left-back, depending upon whether Ferguson has a long-term plan for Fabio, who has spent the campaign with crisis club QPR.

There is no intention to go head-to-head with City or Chelsea on pure finance alone. But Ferguson is confident United can get the players he wants.

"We're competitive in the market - we're not Chelsea or Manchester City in terms of money but we're competitive," Ferguson told Inside United.

"We've been doing a bit of work over the last three or four months, targeting who the players are that we feel could enhance us, make us better or help us maintain the level we're at.

"Hopefully the players we bring into the club in the next year or so will be of the quality we need."

Ferguson has tried to bring in young overseas players, still in the very early stages of their development, to avoid having to spend vast sums. Yet Gerard Pique, Guiseppe Rossi and Paul Pogba have all eventually left to fulfill their potential elsewhere, so it is to be hoped the latest recruit, Belgian Adnan Januzaj, who was given a squad number last week, is more in tune with Ferguson ideals.

Once Sunday's encounter with top-four contenders Chelsea is out of the way, Ferguson will possibly look to get Januzaj on the bench for the final two games as he tries to mould the squad that will defend the Premier League title again next term.

"You have to look at the structure of the club at present, in terms of the number of first-team players we have at 23 or under," said Ferguson. "Older players like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand may be coming towards the end of their careers, but these younger players are the foundation for the next five or six years."

Norwich vs. Chelsea, FA Youth Cup Final, First Leg: Open Thread

167010282

As you no doubt know by now, Chelsea have a bit of a thing for the FA Cup. Just last year alone, the organization (nearly)* collected three of them: at the senior level, at the youth level, and the Chelsea Ladies (almost)* brought one home, too. And although the first team was unceremoniously dismissed from this year's edition by Manchester City and the Ladies lost out to Lincoln, the youth look to carry on the tradition.

* I had this incorrectly at first, having forgotten that the Ladies actually lost on a penalty shootout to Birmingham.

Norwich City is the opponent. I know very little about them but I'd assume Grant Holt doesn't get to play. So, yeah. Stephen's preview may shed a bit more light on the situation. Reece Hall-Johnson certainly has a name fit for a star, but maybe I'm just confusing him with Daryl Hall ... you're here, in gloooooooryyyylaaaaaaaandddddd.

The final, as always, is a two-legged affair with the return leg to follow at Stamford Bridge in a fortnight. I wouldn't mind if the Baby Blues made that second match a formality, just like last year when they started off the final by destroying Blackburn 4-0. About half of that winning team returns for this one, including future superstars Islam Feruz, Lewis Baker, John Swift, and Nathan Ake.

Chelsea U18 starting lineup (4-3-3):
Mitchell Beeney | Kevin Wright, Nathan Ake, Alex Davey, Ola Aina | Charlie Colkett, Lewis Baker, Ruben Loftus-Cheek | Jeremie Boga, Islam Feruz, Alex Kiwomya

Substitutes from: Ben Killip, Fankaty Dabo, Dion Conroy, Charly Musonda Jr., John Swift

No, your eyes are not deceiving you, that is much heralded Charly Musonda Jr. on the bench, having just received his clearance to step up from the U16 team for whom, by all reports, he's been excellent.

Chelsea vs. Swansea City: Are the Blues Going to Have It All Their Own?

Ask any Chelsea fan at the beginning of this season if winning the Europa League and qualifying for the Champions League via the Premier League's top four would make for a good campaign, and the answer would have been a resounding "No."

Chelsea were reigning European champions after all, and having assembled an exciting squad that included one of Europe's most coveted young talents in Eden Hazard, the possibilities seemed endless.

But very few saw the storm clouds gathering on the horizon, and by November, Chelsea's season had well and truly gone off the rails. Roberto di Matteo had been fired as manager, they were losing ground in the title race, and the Blues had crashed out of the Champions League in the group stages—the first reigning champions to do so.

Their season was in ruins, yet bit by bit, Chelsea have restored the faith. It's not quite at the levels we witnessed in August, but after a sixth home league win in a row against Swansea City on Sunday, the feel-good factor is returning to Stamford Bridge.

Make no doubt, Rafa Benitez has played his part in that, as too have the likes of Juan Mata, Frank Lampard and Hazard, among others. Then again, so too have the misgivings of their rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

Indeed, following the Gunners and Spurs' failure to take maximum points from their fixtures this weekend, the pendulum for a place in the top four has swung back in Chelsea's favor.

Where the duo have failed to capitalize on Chelsea's ups and downs this term, it's the Blues who are beginning to look ruthless and take charge. It may be temporary, but they're in the driving seat right now.

Benitez's side also stands on the verge of a place in the Europa League final—a competition many predicted would scupper their Champions League aspirations. In fact, it's been quite the contrary.

In the eight league games Chelsea have played since their first outing in the competition—coming against Sparta Prague on Valentine's Day—if anything, their position in the top four has got stronger.

Chelsea have picked up an average of two points per match, while rivals Tottenham Hotspur have fallen off the pace with 1.75. Playing a game more, Arsenal have taken 20 points from a possible 27 but remain a point adrift of the Blues.

Benitez and Chelsea still have a tricky run-in, of course. They face Manchester United at Old Trafford next weekend before entertaining Spurs at Stamford Bridge on May 8.

But from fans campaigning against the manager and booing poor performances, the harmony has returned, and Chelsea are reaping the benefits.

It begs the question: Winning the Europa League and qualifying for the Champions League—after all we've seen at Stamford Bridge this season, it couldn't happen, could it?

Alan Titchmarsh: Will youngsters look up to Chelsea Flower Show?

Alan Titchmarsh: Will youngsters look up to Chelsea Flower Show? This is Somerset -- *Celebrity and industry's own faults undermine Chelsea's future, warns Alan Titchmarsh... * Thanks to its location in the grounds of Sir Christopher Wren's magnificent Royal Hospital, and to the matchless standard of growing and garden design skills, this year the RHS Chelsea Flower Show celebrates its centenary. Visitors to this year's event will no doubt have happy memories but how many, or their friends, sons, daughters, grandsons or granddaughters, will consider horticulture as a career? Because if more young people do not then, in the next 20 years, Chelsea Flower Show as we know it could cease to exist. A survey of 1,000 people last year revealed that 70 per cent of 18-year-olds believe careers in horticulture should only be considered by people who have "failed academically", and nearly half of under-25s think it an unskilled career – despite the skills, the spectacle and the expertise that is there for all to see. This is a generation brought up on The X-Factor and Britain's Got Talent; on I'm a Celebrity and Big Brother. Their aspirations are governed by what they perceive as "cool", and their role models are the people who are seized upon and lauded by the media – Gwynneth Paltrow and One Direction, Victoria Beckham and Daniel Craig, Dame Judi Dench and Justin Bieber – people to cover all kinds of aspiration, from the inadvisable to the cerebral. But you say that not all young people want to become celebrities. Even fewer will actually achieve that goal. Fair enough; those who don't will probably become lawyers, or teachers, or office workers, or bankers. But they are unlikely to even glance in the direction of horticulture. Why? To some extent because careers advisers never even think of it. And why do they never even think of it? Because we, as an industry, are rotten at PR. We have the best jobs in the world – growing plants, designing gardens, managing open spaces, feeding the population, looking after historic trees and famous gardens, conducting scientific research into plant breeding, pests and diseases, collecting plants in far-flung parts of the globe, writing and broadcasting about our passion. Oh, there are times, I admit, when the job is a bit uncomfortable, but what would you rather do – gaze at a computer screen all day or do a job that can really change lives; one that involves creativity and mental stimulation, and one which will give you lashings of fresh air and a healthy tan? There is much to learn and, as anyone who has been involved with horticulture will tell you, it can be tremendously challenging. And yet our role is undervalued by Government, by the population and by young people in particular – in every instance because they just do not understand the breadth of what we do and its importance. Recent findings, which form part of Horticulture Matters – a report the industry will present to Government on May 14 – highlights the extent of the skills shortage in UK horticulture. Some 200 horticultural businesses were surveyed and over 70 per cent of them said they can't fill skilled vacancies. And 90 per cent said horticulture lacks career appeal. If this situation continues, British horticulture will dwindle and become a pale shadow of its former self, and Chelsea Flower Show little more than a wistful memory. The Centenary of Chelsea Flower Show gives us an opportunity that is not to be wasted. A chance to demonstrate that those of us involved in horticulture are not thick, or dull, or unadventurous or simply incapable of doing anything else. The Chelsea Centenary Appeal is a one-year RHS fund-raising campaign primarily to help engage young people with horticulture. We aim to raise a million pounds "to save the horticulturist". Learning centres at RHS gardens at Wisley in Surrey, Rosemoor in Devon, and Harlow Car in Yorkshire host more than 40,000 children on school visits every year. The RHS aims to create 15 apprenticeships in the next three years. Today the RHS Campaign for School Gardening supports well over half of all UK schools – around 16,800 of them. RHS advisors last year helped equip 2,100 teachers with gardening knowledge. This must continue now that Government has agreed that gardening should be a part of the national curriculum for key stages 1 to 3. We must not squander this opportunity. It's only gardening to some. But to those of us in the know, it is a window on the wider world. It's time we reconnected them with apples rather than Apple Macs, plant cells rather than cell phones and raspberries as well as Blackberries. Only by handing on our skills and our enthusiasm and by firing their imaginations can we be sure that the Chelsea Flower Show will continue to thrive and that horticulture and the nation's landscape will be in safe hands.
