Where next for Jose Mourinho? The Special One’s managerial options

On the move: Mourinho appears likely to leave Madrid this summer (Picture: Getty)

With reports emerging that Jose Mourinho has already agreed a deal to leave Real Madrid at the end of the season, the speculation about the Portuguese coach’s next move is set to grow by the day. He’s claimed his next job will ‘probably’ be in England and a record of silverware wherever he’s been will ensure Mourinho has no shortage of blue-chip suitors in the summer. Metro takes a look at the runners and riders.

CHELSEA
Ask a bookmaker where Mourinho is most likely to land next and they will tell you Stamford Bridge – and we all know what they say about a penniless bookie. There’s huge history – good and bad – between Mourinho and Chelsea and if Roman Abramovich really is ready to roll out the blue carpet for his old adversary then Mourinho is said to be more than keen to return. Perceived wisdom says you should never go back, but does the Special One strike you as a man to follow perceived wisdom? Me neither.
Latest odds: 5/4

MANCHESTER UNITED
Is Jose a good fit for United? Many fans think not and Old Trafford legend Sir Bobby Charlton, a director and influential boardroom figure, has had some pretty tough things to say about him in recent times. However, Real Madrid’s recent win at United or, more specifically, Mourinho’s magnanimous post-match reaction, may have helped sway the argument. But the biggest factor remains this, there is no vacancy at Old Trafford – unless Sir Alex and Mourinho discussed more than the referee’s performance over their traditional post-match glass of wine last week of course.
Latest odds: 7/1

Paris catch: Zlatan Ibrahimovic has proved big names can flourish at PSG (Picture: AFP/Getty)

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN
The betting markets on Mourinho’s next move, fuelled by British punters, are packed with Premier League clubs – and PSG. Ligue 1 not a big enough stage for Mourinho’s ego? It’s big enough for Zlatan Ibrahimovic and David Beckham and those two don’t exactly shun the limelight. There’s money to spend and money to earn and the temptation of winning a domestic league title in an unprecedented fifth different country. The word in Spain and France is talks are under way.
Latest odds: 7/4

MORE – PSG: WE DON’T WANT MOURINHO OR WENGER

ARSENAL
Unlikely? Well, Mourinho would love a London club, Tottenham are off the market and the Chelsea move could be complicated. Arsenal and Arsene Wenger are closer to a parting of the ways than at any time in the Frenchman’s 17-year reign. If the Gunners miss out on Champions League football Wenger could be gone, but can you see Jose working in the Europa League? Yep, unlikely was the right word.
Latest odds: 10/1

History lesson: Mourinho has replaced Roberto Mancini before, could he do it again? (Picture: Getty)

MANCHESTER CITY
There’s a feeling that Roberto Mancini’s had his chance at City and, after two failures to make it out of the Champions League group stages, he’ll be moved on in the summer. Sheikh Mansour will want a top-line replacement and Mourinho may relish the chance to repeat the history he created at Inter Milan, where he turned Mancini’s domestic champions into European Cup winners. Noisy neighbours? They may only just be getting started.
Latest odds: 3/1

REAL MADRID
So Mourinho’s men have discussed an exit strategy with Madrid officials? That doesn’t mean he’s going to go. Recent wins over Barcelona and Manchester United have suggested reports of dressing-room unrest are under control and the club’s form since the winter break has been impressive. If Mourinho delivers Madrid’s fabled tenth European title it would be a fine way to bow out – or it could be the precursor to a u-turn in the Bernabeu boardroom. This is Real Madrid we’re talking about after all.
