Sir Alex Ferguson insists it is 'absolute nonsense' he refused to shake hands with Chelsea interim boss Rafael Benitez when the Blues faced Manchester United last Sunday.

Chelsea managed to claw back a 2-0 deficit in the FA Cup sixth round tie to earn a replay, but much of the post-match talk was of Benitez's claims the Ferguson refused to acknowledge him.

The pair have a fiery history dating back to Benitez's tenure at Liverpool, but the Manchester United boss says he had no reason to deliberately ignore the Spaniard.

'Absolute nonsense. Why wouldn’t I shake hands? Have you ever seen me not shake hands with anyone?' said Ferguson.

'I never saw him, I was signing autographs. If he wanted to shake my hand he could have stood in front of me.'

Speaking after last Sunday's match, Benitez had said: 'I was waiting [to shake hands] at the beginning. It's up to him, I was in the way waiting.'

Benitez and Ferguson will meet again on Easter Monday when the replay takes place at Stamford Bridge, before a Premier League clash between Manchester United and Chelsea at Old Trafford on May 4.
