A Russian news website, Russia Today, has reported that Roman Abramovich has been arrested in the United States.

The news was denied by Abramovich's official spokesman, but there has been currently been no comment from the FBI.

Russia Today gave little information regarding the nature of the arrest, but the news closely follows the death of Russian oligarch Boris Beresovsky.

The two were embroiled in a bitter court battle that Abramovich eventually won, leaving Beresovsky with a crippling bill from legal fees.

The pair were once business partners and the court case is said to have been one of the costliest in UK history.

Beresovsky was seeking £3 billion in damages who accused Abramovich of blackmail, breach of trust and breach of contract.

The case centred on the disputed ownership of Russian oil company Sibneft.

It is thought Beresovsky took his own life after failing to adapt to his depleted financial situation.

There have been rumours of outside involvement in Beresovsky's death, though this has been denied by police.

Abramovich's press secretary John Mann quickly moved to dispel the rumours, insisting the reports were 'completely untrue' according to IBTimes.

The billionaire bought Chelsea in 2003 and has gone on to invest significant sums of money in the Premier League side.
