Wayne Rooney celebrated his Manchester United recall by scoring an early goal in the FA Cup quarter final with Chelsea.
The forward, who was axed for last week's defeat against Real Madrid, gave United a two-goal lead after just 10 minutes when his curling free-kick evaded all challengers and nestled in at Petr Cech’s far post.
Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck dropped to the bench to make way for Rooney and Javier Hernandez, who got United off and underway with a fantastic looping header over Cech.
The Mexican evaded the attention of the Blues defence to get on the end of a superb lofted Michael Carrick pass after five minutes.
Ryan Giggs was not included at all after his lung-busting performance in midweek, and was replaced by Shinji Kagawa.
Nani, who was controversially sent off against Madrid, kept his place, while Jonny Evans came in for captain Nemanja Vidic.
Blues boss Rafa Benitez again opted against selecting John Terry and Fernando Torres for a key domestic fixture, and decided to use Gary Cahill and David Luiz as his centre-back pairing, with Demba Ba operating on his own up front.
Teams:
Manchester United: De Gea, Rafael, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra, Carrick, Cleverley, Nani, Rooney, Kagawa, Hernandez.
Subs: Amos, Van Persie, Valencia, Anderson, Vidic, Young, Welbeck.
Chelsea: Cech, Azpilicueta, Cahill, Luiz, Cole, Lampard, Ramires, Oscar, Mata, Moses, Ba.
