Frank Lampard proved his enduring value to Chelsea by reaching 200 goals in a 2-0 victory over former club West Ham as the Blues leapfrogged Tottenham in the race for third.

The 34-year-old headed home the opener for his 12th goal of the season to move just two behind Bobby Tambling's Chelsea record of 202.

But Lampard – who is set to leave in the summer when his deal expires – said: 'Everyone keeps talking about the goalscoring record. I would rather people kept quiet. The important thing is trying to score goals to win games.'

The only sour note for Lampard at Stamford Bridge came as he appeared to be targeted by coins thrown by West Ham fans as he celebrated his the milestone in an incident now being investigated by police.

'When you score 200 goals you don't think too much about where you go,' interim Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez said. 'You celebrate and afterwards we realised he would've been better to be in another part.'

With Tottenham losing 1-0 to Fulham, Chelsea moved a point ahead of them into third place.

Given Spurs are only four points ahead of Arsenal, who have one match in hand, boss Andre Villas-Boas accepts comparisons will be drawn between the current dip in form and the one that took place under Harry Redknapp last season.

'You can't hide from what has happened in the past with Spurs,' Villas-Boas said. 'You just have to make sure that we are able to fight against it. It has been a difficult month.'
