Fowler urges Chelsea fans to get behind Benitez

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler understands the frustrations of Chelsea fans against his former boss Rafa Benitez but believes the supporters need to rally behind the Spaniard for the good of the club.

Benitez famously brought Fowler back to Anfield in 2006, five years after the striker had initially left the club to join Leeds United in an £11million deal.

While the Spaniard was a largely popular figure amongst Liverpool fans, Benitez has become the subject of a witch hunt at Stamford Bridge thanks, in some part, to his association with the Reds.

Booed from the day he took over from Roberto Di Matteo, Benitez has struggled to win over the Blues faithful and admits he will walk away from the club at the end of the season.

Fowler sympathises with his old boss, but believes supporters have the right to show their dissatisfaction even if it is to the detriment of the club.

“I think they have been (a bit unfair on Benitez),” Fowler told Sport360. “There are right ways and wrong ways of going about things.

"Fans pay their money and they have every right to say and do whatever they want but the bigger picture is that they're all in it for one thing, and that one thing is for Chelsea to be successful.

“If the fans come to the stadium with a negative attitude for the manager, then sometimes that negative atmosphere spills onto the pitch and disrupts the follow of the team and the way they play.

"It's not ideal but I can see their point with his relationships with Liverpool and other clubs. He was not the manager Chelsea fans wanted.

"But as a supporter, I always think the best thing to do is get behind them this season, get behind him, you may not like him but take it with a pinch of salt and support the team and support Rafa.”

In his time with Liverpool, Fowler clocked up 183 goals, 12 of which came under Benitez. The Spaniard enjoyed a trophy-laden spell with Liverpool, collecting the Champions League in 2005 and the FA Cup a year later.
