Chelsea Transfer Rumors: Yaya Toure Would Be Perfect Fit for Blues

For a moment, despite how crazy it might seem, imagine a Chelsea team with Yaya Toure playing the holding midfielder position. Scary, right?

Eden Hazard and Juan Mata playing out wide and interchanging with Oscar at the attacking midfielder position. Toure imposing his will from box to box. There wouldn't be a better midfield in the Premier League—or most of Europe, for that matter—and the Blues would be really, really good.

It all seems to good to be true, right? Well, it probably is, but rumors persist that Toure wants a contract extension and will leave this summer if he doesn't get his wish.

Mark Irwin and Antony Kastrinakis of The Sun suggest Toure is unhappy and Chelsea is among the clubs pushing the hardest to acquire his services:

Chelsea and Real Madrid are leading the chase to land £22million Manchester City star Yaya Toure.

Furious Toure has told City he will buy out his contract and leave this summer unless they hand him a new deal by Saturday. And his ultimatum has alerted Europe's top clubs including struggling Chelsea, who see the powerful Ivorian as the perfect replacement for Frank Lampard.

Toure, 29, still has two years of his £220,000-a-week deal to run and will have to stump up £22m to buy his way out of City.

Of course, just to keep things interesting, Martin Blackburn of The Sun later reported that City insiders believed the two sides could reach an agreement, even if it didn't happen by Saturday.

It's hard to imagine Manchester City failing to retain Toure, especially seeing as money isn't exactly lacking for the club. And you could certainly make the argument that Toure is the team's most important player, though David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany might have something to say about that.

Plus, City will do everything in its power to assure that Toure doesn't end up with a league rival. Only Arsenal allows its top players to go to other teams in the Premier League, after all.

Still, it is fun to imagine Toure replacing Frank Lampard and giving Chelsea one of the most dynamic midfields in the world. I know Toure doesn't like to restrict himself to a holding position, but paired with John Obi Mikel, he could remain the link between the defense and attack as well as push play forward.

A triangle of Mikel, Toure and Oscar would be a whole lot of fun to watch, especially with Mata dazzling from one side and Hazard breaking down defenders at will on the other.

Do I think it will happen? No. As an Arsenal fan, do I want it to happen? Absolutely not. Would I secretly play as Chelsea a whole lot on next year's version of FIFA if it did happen, however?

Um, yeah, I would. And you would too. Keep an eye on this story.
