Chelsea have been dealt another blow in their hunt for a new manager after Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone signed a new four-year deal at the club.

Simeone was linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in December, as the Blues up their pursuit of a replacement for interim manager Rafael Benitez, who is set for his west London exit at the end of the season.

But it now looks increasingly likely that the former Argentina international – famed in part for his scrap with David Beckham which saw the latter sent off at France '98 – will have to be struck off Chelsea's wish-list, as he joins the likes of Pep Guardiola as those who have rejected the Blues' advances.

Simeone is currently working wonders at Atletico Madrid, who are currently second in La Liga, 11 points behind leaders Barcelona, but two points clear of city rivals Real and boasting a flawless home league record.

Atletico have also reached the Copa del Rey final, where they will face Jose Mourinho's side, having already bagged one piece of silverware this season after their crushing 4-1 defeat of Chelsea in the Uefa Super Cup in August.
