The midfielder's contract expires at the end of the season and he looks set for an exit from Stamford Bridge if no new deal is agreed.

Lampard has suggested he is keen to stay at the club but would have no shortage of suitors should he become available on a free transfer.

The player has been linked with a host of top clubs from around the world including Manchester United, Inter Milan, Juventus, PSG and LA Galaxy.

Many Chelsea fans are shocked that the club are seemingly happy to release a player who retains the ability to hit the back of the net on a regular basis.

It had seemed maybe they would be placated after Gourlay suggested talks were going on in private but he has seemingly reneged on that position leaving Lampard's future shrouded in uncertainty.

Speaking about Lampard's future to the official Chelsea FC website, Gourlay said 'I am not prepared to discuss this at this time. Obviously conversations must remain confidential between the club and the player at all times so that is as much as I can say.'
