Sunderland 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur | Premier League match report

At the final whistle, André Villas-Boas clenched both fists in a modest but heartfelt gesture of celebration. After that came a bear hug with his assistant, Steffen Freund, and an embrace for Scott Parker as Tottenham's manager headed towards the new year with a reputation shredded at Chelsea last season restored and his side seemingly set fair for Champions League qualification.

Spurs were good, at times very good, and, despite being much improved from a few weeks ago, Martin O'Neill will know his team could have suffered an appreciably heavier defeat at the hands of opponents who have won six of their past eight Premier League games.

"We played with a lot of heart and got ourselves in front," Sunderland's manager said. "But Tottenham are a very fine side indeed. André has done brilliantly."

Tottenham's manager could have done without Gareth Bale incurring a harsh-looking late yellow card for diving after a challenge by Craig Gardner which, being his fifth booking this season, means he misses Tuesday's home match against Reading. The winger has been booked for diving five times in the past two seasons, more than any other Premier League player.

"I've been clipped and booked for no reason again," Bale said. "There's nothing I can do, the referees need to look a bit closer. People think I'm diving when there's contact. If there's contact, what do you want me to do – hit my head on the floor? I have to put my hands down to protect myself. If people kick me, I'm going to go down."

If jeering Sunderland fans were relieved when Bale was withdrawn nine minutes from time, Spurs started deceptively slowly. Perhaps noting that Manchester City's lack of width played a big part in their struggles to get behind O'Neill's defence when Sunderland beat Roberto Mancini's side here on Boxing Day, Villas-Boas arranged Spurs in a 4-4-2 formation featuring Aaron Lennon and Bale wide.

While Sandro and Mousa Dembélé were strong enough to hold their own in central midfield, initially an unexpected problem lay with Lennon, who made little early impact down the visiting right against Matthew Kilgallon, Sunderland's left-back for the day in place of the ineligible Tottenham loanee Danny Rose.

Some exhilarating cameos from Bale served as a reminder that Gardner could never relax but the winger drifted in and out of things. Excelling in fits and starts Bale both excited the crowd and offered Sunderland too many chances to catch their collective breath and regroup.

On one occasion when Lennon dodged Kilgallon adroitly to direct a deft chip in Bale's direction, he headed disappointingly wide from 10 yards. With Emmanuel Adebayor hitting the bar with a shot from two yards out, Sunderland were living dangerously but took the lead five minutes before half-time. Kyle Walker's foul on Stéphane Sessègnon resulted in a free-kick delivered with vicious curl and dip by Sebastian Larsson. Extending a boot to connect with that superior delivery, Steven Fletcher forced Hugo Lloris, excellent throughout, into a fine save, only for John O'Shea to redirect the rebound home from six yards.

"We deserved to be 1-0 down," Villas-Boas said. "But we talked about how to change things at half-time." Tottenham's players heeded his homily and a combination of Walker's corner and the head of Sunderland's Carlos Cuéllar provided an equaliser. Lennon was growing into the game and when his ball ricocheted back off Kilgallon he took full advantage.

After knocking it past O'Shea, the winger sashayed around the defender, regaining possession before beating Simon Mignolet with an accomplished right-foot finish.

Despite Lloris saving Adam Johnson's 20-yard shot, Spurs were firmly in control and O'Neill attempted to alter the balance of power with a series of substitutions that resulted in his side virtually playing 4-2-4 and James McClean occupying a new central midfield role.

Although Spurs had further chances on the break, most notably involving Jermain Defoe and Adebayor, Villas-Boas was sufficiently anxious to replace Lennon with Parker.

Bale's yellow card following that controversial tumble – the pursuing Gardner appeared to block the winger's path with an arm, and knee-level contact looked to be made – had offered Sunderland unlikely hope.

"It was a bit unfair and a bad mistake but it was a consequence of Gareth's pace, his ability, his skill; it makes things very difficult for referees to judge," Villas-Boas said. "We want to take diving out of the game. But speed is difficult for referees to analyse and everybody can make a mistake."

Chelsea to Complete £26.5m Trio Of January Signings

Paulinho Man CityStamford Bridge side line up spending spree the moment the transfer window opens next month.

Check in to Chelsea vs QPR

Demba Ba was last night set to become the first of three Chelsea transfer window signings.

The Newcastle striker was locked in talks over a £7.5million switch to Stamford Bridge.

And Rafa Benitez's spending won't stop there, with a £10m move being lined up for Metalist Kharkiv's midfielder Taison followed by Corinthians' Paulinho.

Chelsea are prepared to activate the buy-out clause in Ba's contract to make him their first signing of the January window.

SOURCE: Daily Mirror

The apparent push to bring in Demba Ba is, according to this source, something of a stop-gap measure with Atletico Madrid goal machine Radamel Falcao being Chelsea's prime summer target.

The Blues are looking to the Newcastle United forward to add a further goal-scoring option even though Spaniard Fernando Torres has started to show glimpses of the form that led to Chelsea forking out £50m for his services.

Ba is a proven Premier League goal-scorer and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will be more than willing to pay the £7.5m fee needed to trigger the Senegal international's release clause.

Taison is into his third season at Ukraine side Metalist Kharkiv and has been a massive success, scoring and assisting regularly and would certainly be interested in a move to the Premier League side.

The adaptable attacker can play in an advanced central midfield role as well as on the flanks and was considered a very exciting talent whilst at Internacional prior to his move to Ukraine.

Chelsea will have to hope an application for a work permit for the 24 year old will succeed, a move that could be somewhat complicated by the fact Taison hasn't been capped at senior level by Brazil.

The Premier League side have been linked with interest in box to box midfielder £9m rated Brazilian international Paulinho for some months now and came face to face with the Corinthians man when Chelsea lose the FIFA Club World Cup Final against the Sao Paulo based side.

Predict360: Man Utd close the gap on City & Liverpool

After being served up a Boxing Day feast the Premier League returns for seconds this weekend, with the race for the Predict360 league title certainly hotting up.

Defeats for Manchester City and Liverpool on Wednesday - and wrong predictions too from Obaydah and Darren - has allowed the chasing pack, including Moe's Man Utd, to close the gap.

But how will they fare this weekend? Let's find out our armchair experts predictions...

TED TOTSIDIS - @TedTots (Arsenal)
What went wrong last week? As soon as the match finished against Wigan last week, I picked my heart up off the floor, settled my nerves and slapped myself in the face a few times. It was one of the rare occasions that I think I knew what it felt like to be a United fan.

We played absolutely horrible football the entire match, yet managed to walk away from the DW with all three points. I then preceded to convince myself that that's what all "good" teams do, right?

This week's prediction: After two matches away, today we return to The Emirates to host our bogey team, Newcastle United. During the week Wenger came out and reassured everyone that even he feared Newcastle's attack, which is a great way to go into this match. After the performance they put on at Old Trafford on Boxing Day, it would be hard to argue his point, however surely we should be able to contain them as a unit, no?

Too many rhetorical questions today. Anyway, what I know is that this fixture always delivers drama with a few goals and I think Giroud and Walcott will be amongst them, with Wilshere and Cazorla pulling all the right strings in the midfield. Arsenal 2-1 Newcastle

SHIVAM MANGHNANI - @ShivamLM (Chelsea)
What went wrong last week?
The Norwich match was tighter than I expected but thankfully we got the vital three points needed. David Luiz once again excelled in midfield and playing him there could the best thing of Rafael Benitez’s Chelsea reign (only six months to go!).

Defensively we were solid and to win 1-0 after scoring eight the previous match shows that Benitez has instilled a lot of confidence into the side.

This week's prediction: Onto the Everton game, Goodison Park is a difficult place to go to for any team but Chelsea haven’t won there away since 2008 when Shaun Wright-Philips started for the Blues so you wouldn’t blame me for being pessimistic.

But Benitez has a good record against Moyes and with Fellaini unavailable there is one less threat to our back four. With games coming thick and fast and still being without John Terry, this game will be a tough test for a squad that is very tired after globetrotting. I suspect it will go the same way as the Norwich game. But I am feeling optimistic. Everton 1-2 Chelsea

MARK SCHUMANN - @MarkSchuey (Everton)
What went wrong last week?
Another three points for Everton to give us six in total over the festive period which is great. Thankfully this time around I at least got the result correct and missed out on a perfect score by one Everton goal!

This week's prediction: A tough match this week against an in-form Chelsea team. With Fellaini still suspended I can't see Everton winning, but wouldn't it be great to get one over on the ex-Liverpool manager Benitez?! Everton 1-1 Chelsea

OBAYDAH AL-NAMER - @LFCArabia (Liverpool)
What went wrong last week? Poor defending cost us dearly and I was bemused by Rodgers' unchanged line-up. I guess he was flattered by the display against Fulham, but when you play Stoke City you need warriors not primmadonnas. No one other than Suarez showed heart. I expect more from a Liverpool manager aiming for second!

This week's prediction: We battered Fulham at the weekend, but on the other hand we get battered by Villa and Stoke either side. Liverpool need to improve quite dramatically. To be honest that transfer spree from last summer has set us back even further than I thought.

The team has no shape; defend deep and yet our attackers end up high up the pitch. Suarez works his socks off and no one follows suit or even supports him.

I'm not feeling too confident now but we have enough power to brush aside struggling and woeful QPR, don't we Brendan? QPR 0-2 Liverpool

DARREN BALL - @AbuDhabiDaz (Man City)
What went wrong last week?
Boxing Day was a disaster as we once again failed to beat Sunderland and lost to another controversial goal, which to make it harder to swallow was scored by Adam Johnson.

It was one of them days for City where we had plenty of chances to score but once again we decided the best tactic was to push the ball through the middle and look for those spaces that were simply not there. Width is needed in this team for us to generate the space in front of goal.

This week's prediction: In this busy time for fixtures we go on another lengthy road trip to somewhere close to Holland and visit the Canaries.

A five hour road trip for the fans with inflated ticket prices is the talk surrounding this fixture rather than the actual game. City will welcome back Clichy and Nasri with Balotelli a possibility.

I think coming off a loss in the last game will fire up City to get the vehicle rolling again. So once again I have turned to the Fifa 13 game and played my son. He was City and I was Norwich. After 90 minute the result is he is much better than I am at that game! Norwich 0-3 Man City

MOHAMMED ANABTAWI - @MoeAnabtawi (Manchester United)
What went wrong last week?
The most ultimate cliché applied to the 4-3 thriller at Old Trafford last week and that is it was truly a game of two halves. Michael Carrick and a 39-year old Ryan Giggs were immense. Cleverely changed the match upon his introduction into the second half and Valencia’s performance in the second half was a classic case of schizophrenia!

The hair dryer does miracles when Fergie fumes! Defensively, we were all over the place, no surprise there. The fact that we won, Man City lost and we are seven points clear will not hide anything. Fergie will want to bounce back defensively vs. West Brom.

This week's prediction: Steve Clarke and West Brom have done a tremendous job this season hovering in the European places. West Brom are a very well organised side and it will be a tough one at Old Trafford.

With Rooney out for 2-3 weeks, we can only hope for the same sense of urgency we saw in that second half vs Newcastle to resurface. Fergie will be adamant to keep United at least seven points clear at top of the table by 9pm UAE time tonight.

With Danny Welbeck and Ashley Young back into the first-team, we can expect United to alternate attacks from the wings. We have the capabilities of coming out with a positive result. Ball possession is key and defensive concentration is vital. We need a clean sheet today. Nonetheless, I am hoping for a less stressful night at Old Trafford, but knowing Manchester United, we will never do things the easy way. Man Utd 2-0 West Brom

SIMON THURSTON - @SimonPThurston (Tottenham)
What went wrong last time out?
I really thought following a thrashing in their previous outing, that Aston Villa would go out, make themselves difficult to beat, and try and frustrate Tottenham, hence my 2-1 prediction. But that didn't happen.

Spurs dominated from the first minute to the last and ultimately the scoreline could have been far worse than 4-0. The Lilleywhites had to show a lot of patience on Wednesday. They dominated all phases of the game, but it wasn't until the second half that they broke the deadlock.

And they'll need a similar attitude against a workmanlike Sunderland team, who in the past month have become a different proposition entirely, and of course beat the champions and kept a clean sheet in their previous game.

This week's prediction: Since the creation of the Premier League, Spurs have won 13 of the 22 meetings between the clubs, only suffering five defeats. After a shaky first quarter of the season, Martin O'Neill has instilled a renewed belief in his troops and I am sure Gareth Bale will not be afforded the amount of space he exploited three days ago.

Tottenham are likely to make some changes from the team that won at Villa to freshen things up, and Danny Rose won't be eligible for Sunderland against his parent club. On a cold, wet afternoon in the North East it is not going to be easy. I expect a tight affair. Sunderland 0-1 Tottenham

CURRENT LEAGUE TABLE (after 14 rounds)
Liverpool (Obaydah) – 11pts
Man City (Darren) – 11
Man Utd (Moe) – 10
Everton (Mark) – 8
Tottenham (Simon) – 8

January transfer window: Top 10 targets for Premier League clubs

The best and worst time of the football season gets underway this week, when the January transfer window rolls into town for another month of excitement, frustration and drama.

Whether it's a new striker to fire you up the table, or a defender to stop you slipping down it, your club will undoubtedly be in the market for new players, with record amounts expected to be spent on new recruits.

But who are the top names to watch out for next month? Metro Sport is here to help.

10. Simon Mignolet

Brilliant Belgian: Simon Mignolet has developed into a quality 'keeper (Picture: Getty)
Brilliant Belgian: Simon Mignolet has developed into a quality ‘keeper (Picture: Getty)

The Sunderland glovesman came into the Premier League as a nobody, but having seen off Craig Gordon, the most expensive goalkeeper in British football, and become the Black Cats star man, other clubs are starting to show an interest in the Belgian.

Mignolet has reportedly been watched by Arsenal and Chelsea scouts in the last few weeks, while Man City need a good backup for Joe Hart. Sunderland could cash in.

Price: £8million.
Interested clubs: Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City.

9. Michael Dawson

Out of favour: Andre Villas-Boas is not a fan of Michael Dawson (Picture: AFP)
Out of favour: Andre Villas-Boas is not a fan of Michael Dawson (Picture: AFP)

Tottenham nearly flogged England defender Dawson to QPR in the summer, but the transfer eventually collapsed, and he's since proved his worth with a number of fleeting performances in the side.

However, Andre Villas-Boas wants the money for other targets, and Dawson would be a terrific signing for any of the teams in the bottom half. A rare bargain.

Price: £6million
Interested clubs: Aston Villa, Fulham, Sunderland, QPR.

8. Andrey Arshavin

Still quality: Andrey Arshavin has been linked with a switch away from Arsenal (Picture: Getty)
Still quality: Andrey Arshavin has been linked with a switch away from Arsenal (Picture: Getty)

A Russian genius, Arshavin is still Arsenal's record signing at £15million. But after falling out of love with playing on the wing, and sandwiched between a loan spell back at Zenit, the playmaker is a peripheral figure at the Emirates.

The quality is still there and with Arshavin reportedly desperate to stay in England, he has the little bit of class that can make the difference to those Europa League hopefuls.

Price: £2million
Interested clubs: Newcastle, Fulham, West Ham, Reading.

7. Luis Nani

Fall out: Nani has a tumultuous relationship with Manchester United (Picture: Daily Mail)
Fall out: Nani has a tumultuous relationship with Manchester United (Picture: Daily Mail)

Nani might think he's Cristiano Ronaldo mark II – but he's not. Still, the back-flipping Portuguese is still a top player on his day, and could well be on the move in the new year, after spending most of this year rowing with Sir Alex over a new contract.

It seems best for all parties if Nani pushes off, and while Barcelona or Real Madrid won't be sparking a mad scramble, Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool should take a serious look.

Price: £12million
Interested clubs: Arsenal, Benfica, Zenit

6. Darren Bent

New home: Darren Bent needs a club to earn himself a recall to the England squad (Picture: Getty)
New home: Darren Bent needs a club to earn himself a recall to the England squad (Picture: Getty)

Bent is one of the most prolific finishers in the Premier League, but following Paul Lambert's appointment as manager, he hasn't had a sniff of game time.

Make of that what you will, but a January exit is all but certain, with Bent keen to win back his England place. 'Who needs a cheap, reliable, proven goalscorer,' the transfer Gods ask. 'Me,' will reply just about everybody.

Price: £6million
Interested clubs: Liverpool, QPR, Fulham, Sunderland, Newcastle.

5. Demba Ba

In demand: There's a long list of clubs who want Demba Ba (Picture: Getty)
In demand: There’s a long list of clubs who want Demba Ba (Picture: Getty)

Newcastle say they want to buy players by the bucketload in January, but one suspects they'll spend the majority of the new year fending off interested admirers keen on Ba.

The striker, a free transfer from West Ham, has a good goal record, and a £7.5million buyout clause. Put those two together, and expect a transfer scramble.

Price: £7.5million
Interested clubs: Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham

4. David Villa

Huge talent: David Villa would be a huge coup on-loan from Barcelona (Picture: PA)
Huge talent: David Villa would be a huge coup on-loan from Barcelona (Picture: PA)

Villa was the best striker in the world a couple of years ago, and has only had his crown snatched after picking up a nasty broken leg last season.

After that, and the amazing antics of a certain Lionel Messi, Villa struggles for game time at Barcelona, and has reportedly been made available for loan. All the top clubs, and bizarrely Everton, have already expressed an interest.

Price: Loan
Interested clubs: Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Everton.

3. Theo Walcott

Contract rebel: Theo Walcott can't agree new contract terms with Arsenal (Picture: Getty)
Contract rebel: Theo Walcott can’t agree new contract terms with Arsenal (Picture: Getty)

Love him or hate him, Theo Walcott is good, and is getting better and better. His contract is up at Arsenal, and in a typical Gunners tradition, they've forgotten to renew it until the last minute.

He has a healthy offer on the table, but Walcott is dragging his heels, hoping others will offer him more cash. A free agent in the summer, a cheeky £6million bid could force Arsenal to sell now.

Price: £8million
Interested clubs: Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool.

2. Marouane Fellaini

Best season yet: Marouane Fellaini has been in top form this term for Everton (Picture: Getty)
Best season yet: Marouane Fellaini has been in top form this term for Everton (Picture: Getty)

When he's not banned for headbutting defenders, Fellaini is one of the most unplayable midfielders in the world, combining power, energy and physicality with great technique and quick feet.

This season has been his best yet in terms of goals, and teams are circling hoping to tempt him away from Goodison Park. Everton’s record signing won't be cheap, but he's certainly worth going for.

Price: £25million
Interested clubs: Chelsea, Zenit, Real Madrid.

1. Radamel Falcao

Top man: Radamel Falcao is being hunted by all the top clubs (Picture: AP)
Top man: Radamel Falcao is being hunted by all the top clubs (Picture: AP)

It just had to be. An unbelievable finisher with a sensational record, Falcao has had a superb 2012, and deserves a bigger platform in 2013 to show off what he can do.

A top Champions League club – or Chelsea – will do, but Atletico want at least £50million for the goal machine’s services – although every penny will be well spent.

Price: £50million
Interested clubs: Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid

5 Chelsea Players Set to Explode in 2013

As 2012 comes to an end and 2013 begins, Chelsea and its fans have to feel at least a little bit good about their team’s fortunes.

The Blues have won four straight games (outscoring opponents 16-2), are holding on to their third-place spot in the English Premier League, are in the semifinals of the Capital One Cup and are reigning FA Cup and UEFA Champions League winners.

With so many question marks around the Chelsea future of veterans Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and John Terry, it’s hard to tab too many Blues as players to “explode” in the coming year, but here are five who should really impress with their play in the coming 12 months.

Chelsea Yet to Open Contract Talks With Veteran Midfielder Frank Lampard

Lampard ArsenalStamford Bridge hero in the dark over Blues future.

Check in to Chelsea vs QPR

Frank Lampard has revealed that Chelsea are yet to start talks with him over a new contract as the England midfielder nears the end of his current deal.

Lampard underlined his enduring quality with both goals in Sunday's 2-1 win at Everton, but the 34-year-old remains likely to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.

Although Lampard helped Chelsea win the Champions League last season and is now just one goal behind the club's second-top goalscorer of all time, Kerry Dixon, it has been reported for some time that no new deal will be forthcoming for the former West Ham star as the Blues try to lower the age of their squad.

Los Angeles Galaxy, Chinese Super League side Guizhou Renhe and Premier League strugglers QPR have all been linked with a move for Lampard.

And, asked by BBC Sport whether he would be around at Chelsea long enough to equal or beat Dixon, Lampard said: "I'm only one behind so hopefully I'll beat that, but you never should count your chickens.

"At the minute there is nothing been said and my contract's till the summer. I'm enjoying playing, I'm working hard in training, I'm loving being part of the team and the ability we've got in the team.

"That's all I can tell you at the minute, and that's fair enough for me, I'm happy just to keep playing well and contributing to winning games."

Chelsea's supporters would love Lampard to stay but, asked if he had sat down with Blues officials to discuss a new deal, he said: "No."

Neymar Sr admits son prefers Barca to Chelsea & Man City

Neymar da Silva, the father of Santos sensation Neymar, has revealed that Barcelona will be his son’s preferred choice when he leaves Brazil, which he explained will not be until after the 2014 World Cup.

Neymar senior said his son did want to play in Europe to further his career development but told Friday's Barcelona-based Sport daily: "This is what he wants (but) he will do it in 2014."

He added that was why his son's Santos contract had been shortened from 2015 to 2014 to allow him to showcase his talents through to the World Cup on home soil as a home-grown star.

Even so, his father warned that "if Neymar is not happy" or Santos found that it would be better to sell him on financial grounds then that could conceivably be an option. Were that to transpire then the 20-year-old forward is set to head off to Spain's La Liga with Barcelona.

"Barca, of course. Barcelona's football is similar to that of Neymar, isn't that so?" said Neymar senior.

Even so, while admitting to early contacts with the Catalan club, he conceded that "it could be Barca will not want him in 2014."

Barca's Brazilian connections stretching back across the decades could play a part in Neymar's future destination as "Neymar has his idols and it is normal that he would want to triumph where Romario or Ronaldo (played)".

Brazil are hoping the country's growing emergence as a world power could allow Neymar to feel he can stay at home for now at least rather than follow the well-trodden path to Europe.

"Neymar has broken the mould of Brazilian footballers who left to pursue the best financial offer without taking their own personal situation into account," said Neymar da Silva.

Neymar has already turned down one chance of a move to Europe -- rejecting a 36 million euros move to Chelsea two seasons ago and his father said his son was only thinking about his development as a player.

"Neymar needs to grow and mature ... many (players) left and suffered abroad. What Neymar loves is to play football. We will do everything as well as possible to ensure he plays until he is 35."

Meanwhile, Santos recently rejected the advances of mega-rich Premier League champions Manchester City, who had sent a delegation to Brazil in an attempt to sign the striker as soon as mext month.

Sport on Thursday quoted the player as saying he would see out his contract until 2014, insisting he is happy with Pele's old club Santos, and only then think about whether a move to Europe would be in his interests.

Transfer window: Premier League club-by-club guide

Demba Ba is a target for several clubs, Thierry Henry could return to Arsenal and Wesley Sneijder is highly coveted

Arsenal

Money to spend Arsène Wenger still has a large transfer kitty. Ivan Gazidis, the chief executive, has confirmed this and, in short, Wenger can spend whatever he wants to strengthen the squad. The age-old question, though, concerns whether the manager can find sufficient value in the market or quality that represents an upgrade on what he already has.

What's needed A striker, particularly as Wenger will lose Gervinho to the Africa Cup of Nations; a left-back, as the club are open to offers for André Santos and maybe a defensive midfielder. Wojciech Szczesny is not entirely secure as the long-term answer in goal.

Who they're after Thierry Henry, on loan during the MLS off-season, Demba Ba, Wilfried Zaha and Luke Shaw are all prime targets. David Hytner

Aston Villa

Money to spend It is a case of needs must at Villa Park, which means Randy Lerner, the club's owner, will make funds available to help stave off the threat of relegation but there will be no repeat of the club-record deal that brought Darren Bent to the club two years ago. The transfer kitty is likely to be £10m at most.

What's needed Where do you start? Apart from goalkeeper and right-back, Villa need strengthening in just about every position. Experience is the key requirement, given the number of youngsters in Villa's team. A central defender, combative midfielder, striker and left-back have been targeted.

Who they're after Steve Morison, the Wales international striker who is out of favour at Norwich, Lambert's former club, is an option while loan moves for Manchester City's John Guidetti and Tottenham's Tom Huddlestone are possibilities. Stuart James

Chelsea

Money to spend Funding, as ever, is available and will be spent. The outlay may not be as lavish as two years ago, when Fernando Torres and David Luiz arrived for a combined £73.3m, but it will still be impressive.

What's needed A striker to back up Torres given Daniel Sturridge's sale to Liverpool, possibly a second striker to operate off the Spaniard, a central midfielder and, at a push, a left-back.

Who they're after The ideal remains Radamel Falcao but there is an acceptance Atlético Madrid will not sell in January, so Chelsea are monitoring Demba Ba, Bayer Leverkusen's Andre Schürrle, Barcelona's David Villa and the Borussia Dortmund pair Marco Reus and Robert Lewandowski. In midfield, Corinthians' Paulinho is a target with Everton likely to retain Marouane Fellaini until the summer. Southampton's Luke Shaw and Everton's Leighton Baines have attracted interest at left-back. Dominic Fifield

Everton

Money to spend David Moyes has requested an advance on next year's television money, worth at least an extra £20m to each Premier League club, to seize the opportunity of Champions League qualification. He has not received a definite answer and a tempting offer for Marouane Fellaini is more likely to inflate the kitty.

What's needed A new goalkeeper to increase the competition for Tim Howard, more bite in central midfield and another striker to ease the reliance on Nikica Jelavic.

Who they're after Birmingham's keeper Jack Butland, the Paris St-Germain forward Kevin Gameiro and possibly the Club Brugge midfielder Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe are targets should money be available. Loan deals otherwise. Andy Hunter

Fulham

Money to spend The season's initial spark, provided by Dimitar Berbatov, has rather fizzled out and Martin Jol has conceded reinforcements must arrive next month to help his team back into the safety of mid-table. Money will be available, particularly given the sales sanctioned last summer.

What's needed Strengthening up and down the spine of the team, particularly given the uncertainty over Brede Hangeland's long-term future at the club. And both Kerim Frei and Alex Kacaniklic enjoying an injury-free second half to the season.

Who they're after Darren Bent's situation at Aston Villa has not gone unnoticed while Jol, having considered Blackburn's Paul Robinson, should finally complete the £800,000 signing of the Turkish goalkeeper Sinan Bolat from Standard Liège. The Clermont midfielder Yacouba Sylla, who is also interesting QPR, might add steel. Dominic Fifield

Liverpool

Money to spend Brendan Rodgers could be one of the busiest managers in the January window as his employers, Fenway Sports Group, seek to remedy the mistakes of last summer's transfer policy. Liverpool have almost £20m to spend although their manager is still required to remove high earners like Joe Cole off the wage bill.

What's needed As was glaringly obvious last season before Andy Carroll was allowed to leave and has been stated with monotonous regularity ever since: someone else apart from Luis Suárez to score goals.

Who they're after Daniel Sturridge appears certain to join from Chelsea and Tom Ince likewise from Blackpool. PSG's Kevin Gameiro is also a possibility and Rodgers retains an interest in Theo Walcott. Andy Hunter

Manchester City

Money to spend In theory the sky's the limit, despite the strictures of Uefa's financial fair play, so an outlay up to £50m plus wage costs would not be a surprise.

What's needed A strong back-up goalkeeper to give Joe Hart some competition and a central defender – Joleon Lescott is now fourth choice and wants a move, and Kolo Touré could miss all of January after the New Year's Day visit of Stoke City due to Africa Cup of Nations duty. Also a creative midfielder, with Samir Nasri continuing to disappoint. Mario Balotelli's troubles might also cause Roberto Mancini to consider a striker.

Who they're after Stoke's centre-half Ryan Shawcross is of interest, as is Theo Walcott whose flexibility in playing through the middle or wide is a plus, so Mancini will monitor whether the Arsenal forward finally signs a new deal to stay put. Internazionale's Wesley Sneidjer could be a replacement for Nasri. Jamie Jackson

Manchester United

Money to spend In theory anything up to £50m bracket though Sir Alex Ferguson has always been reluctant to spend in the January transfer window, so he may prefer to use any funds generated by a sale if a particularly lucrative bid for one of his more peripheral players is made.

What's needed According to Ferguson the current squad is as good as any he has had during his 26 years at Old Trafford. But with David de Gea still unsure under the high ball the Scot may be tempted if a top-class goalkeeper became available. He could also do with a defensive midfielder and a wide player as Ryan Giggs is used less and less. Long-term, a replacement for Patrice Evra is required.

Who they're after According to Ferguson no one. At the weekend he dismissed reports that Borussia Dortmund's Robert Lewandowski is on his way. Jamie Jackson

Newcastle United

Money to spend Unknown. Second guessing Mike Ashley, Newcastle's maverick owner, is a fool's game and the club is ultra secretive about transfer business.

What's needed A centre-half, a right back, a striker and Demba Ba to stay put.

Who they're after Mathieu Debuchy, the France right-back, is supposed to be arriving from Lille for €6m on Wednesday. There is also strong interest in the FC Twente centre-back Douglas and the Marseille striker Loïc Rémy. Meanwhile Ba's knee problem, wage demands and hefty agent fees mean the £7m release clause in his contract does not represent the bargain it might seem. Louise Taylor

Norwich

Money to spend Chris Hughton is unlikely to have significant cash at his disposal but Norwich have proved there are plenty of bargains to be found outside the Premier League. Alexander Tettey and Robert Snodgrass have proved cheap and shrewd purchases.

What's needed More firepower up front. Grant Holt has scored only four goals this season and the Canaries have had to rely on players from midfield such as Anthony Pilkington getting forward in support of the striker.

Who they're after Hughton failed with a bid to sign Brighton's Craig Mackail-Smith last summer and could step up his pursuit of the 28-year-old in January if Steve Morison is shown the door at Carrow Road, as seems likely. James Riach

Queens Park Rangers

Money to spend Harry Redknapp began by suggesting he would not spend if QPR's position felt hopeless in January, but he will surely not put up with this squad's deficiencies, particularly having publicly complained that too many players are being paid too much to have produced so little. Tony Fernandes will back him in his desperation to remain in the Premier League.

What's needed Most urgently, a strong centre-half and a regular goalscorer.

Who they're after Interest in Nicolas Anelka at Shanghai Shenhua is established while, if £7m can be spent on a player, they could revisit Demba Ba's willingness to leave Newcastle. Clermont's Yacouba Sylla feels like a Redknapp signing in waiting, while the manager may explore a reunion with Joe Cole. Any centre-back targeted would surely have experience in the Premier League, though Michael Dawson from Spurs or Fulham's Brede Hangeland may prove pipe dreams. Dominic Fifield

Reading

Money to spend Reading only spent about £5m last summer and they are unlikely to be convinced that a January spree is the most sensible option in their fight against relegation. However, their billionaire Russian owner, Anton Zingarevich, could always have a change of heart.

What's needed Quality all over the pitch but particularly in attack. Pavel Pogrebnyak has scored only three league goals for the Royals and Brian McDermott could do with more options than just Adam le Fondre and Jason Roberts.

Who they're after Loan signings could be Reading's best way of strengthening their squad this winter, with Arsenal's Andrey Arshavin and Tottenham's Tom Huddlestone both struggling to feature prominently at their respective clubs. James Riach

Southampton

Money to spend Southampton were one of the biggest-spending clubs in Europe last summer, with the £12m purchase of Gastón Ramírez breaking their transfer record. After steadying the ship following a shaky start, Nigel Adkins could once again be allowed to dabble in the market by Southampton's chief executive, Nicola Cortese.

What's needed Defence has to be the priority for Adkins as Southampton have conceded 37 goals in 19 league matches so far this season. They are short of centre-backs and a top-class goalkeeper.

Who they're after Birmingham City's goalkeeper Jack Butland is reportedly on the radar, as is the Cagliari defender Davide Astori. Brighton's winger Will Buckley could make the short move along the south coast. James Riach

Stoke City

Money to spend Minimal especially as Tony Pulis, the manager, has a sizeable squad and has been told by his owner, Peter Coates, to temper any outlay and focus on offering greater opportunity for homegrown players to develop.

What's needed Stoke sit an impressive eighth with 29 points at just over the halfway point so the current squad is doing fine. Pulis, though, would not turn down a consistent goalscorer as Stoke have scored only 21 goals. The left-back position requires strengthening.

Who they're after It may be more of a case of who they can keep as discussions continue with Stoke's captain, Ryan Shawcross, about him finally signing a fresh long-term deal. A contribution from Michael Owen (four substitute appearances, zero goals) would also be welcomed. Jamie Jackson

Sunderland

Money to spend Unknown. Ellis Short, the club's owner, is too canny to bandy any figures around but Martin O'Neill appears to have convinced him the squad requires strengthening.

What's needed A striker, a strong, creative midfielder and a centre-half.

Who they're after Tim Cahill on a short-term deal from New York Red Bulls during the MLS off-season and a possible loan arrangement with Manchester City for the striker John Guidetti. Long-term targets include Joleon Lescott from City, Celtic's Gary Hooper, Norwich's Grant Holt and, although unlikely, James Milner. Louise Taylor

Swansea City

Money to spend They made a tidy profit on player trading in the summer, courtesy of the departures of Joe Allen to Liverpool and Scott Sinclair to Manchester City, so there is up to £10m to spend should Michael Laudrup, the Swansea manager, find the right players.

What's needed The priority is a striker. Laudrup would happily move Danny Graham on and replace him with a centre-forward who can weigh in with a few goals to reduce the burden on Michu. A winger is also a possibility to provide cover.

Who they're after The Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas. Laudrup has spoken openly about his admiration for the 25-year-old Spaniard, although a deal is a long way off from being completed and Swansea will face competition from several other clubs. Eder, the Braga forward, is also on Swansea's radar. Stuart James

Tottenham

Money to spend The chairman, Daniel Levy, will back André Villas-Boas but the available funds would swell if the loans of David Bentley, Jermaine Jenas and Danny Rose could be turned into sales, while Heurelho Gomes and Carlo Cudicini are available for transfer.

What's needed Villas-Boas has an almost fully fit squad and says that he will add nobody. Then again, he was guilty of telling a few porkies over the summer and it is not like Tottenham to remain quiet during a transfer window. The squad needs a striker and cover at full-back and in wide midfield.

Who they're after Big names from abroad – Willian, João Moutinho, Fábio Coentrão and Fernando Llorente would all cost serious money. Closer to home, Wilfried Zaha would not be much cheaper. David Hytner

West Bromwich Albion

Money to spend They spent less than any other Premier League club in the summer so there is no reason to think that there will be much money available in January, especially as Albion are enjoying such a good season.

What's needed Holding on to Romelu Lukaku for the remainder of the season – Chelsea have an option to recall him – would be a big boost. Losing Youssouf Mulumbu during the Africa Cup of Nations is a worry but George Thorne, who made his full Premier League debut at Manchester United on Saturday, could get a chance to shine.

Who they're after Few clubs plan their transfer business as well as Albion, which means panic-buying in January rarely comes into the equation. Unless Lukaku returns to Chelsea – the Belgium international has suggested he would like to stay at The Hawthorns – it is difficult to see much happening other than a few fringe players moving on. Stuart James

West Ham United

Money to spend Funds are tight as the club carries its debts and the board may point out that they helped Sam Allardyce to reshape the squad in the summer after promotion.

What's needed Allardyce says that he desperately wants a couple of new signings as the squad has suffered severely from injuries, particularly in creative positions. The big fear is that Mohamed Diamé, the dynamic midfielder, will be tempted away – he has a £3.5m release clause in his contract and no shortage of admirers.

Who they're after Marouane Chamakh, Nicolas Anelka and Salomon Kalou would all increase Allardyce's options up front, while Gaël Givet could be brought in to bolster the defence. David Hytner

Wigan Athletic

Money to spend Roberto Martínez wants "two or three in January", mainly as a consequence of the crippling injury list that has undermined Wigan for most of the season so far. An FA panel has already given the green light to the free transfer of Honduran midfielder Roger Espinoza from Kansas City.

What's needed Wigan's central defenders have suffered repeated injuries this term and Martínez cannot wait forever on their recovery. More creativity from midfield is necessary too.

Who they're after The Espinoza deal is done, Dutch midfielder Ferrie Bodde has been training with the club since being released by Swansea in the summer and Manchester United's teenage Chilean striker Angelo Henríquez is lined up on loan. Andy Hunter

Chelsea's pursuit of Newcastle's Demba Ba stalls over contract terms

• Talks between Chelsea and Ba's representatives unproductive
• Alan Pardew intends to retain the striker

Chelsea's hopes of signing the Newcastle striker Demba Ba have suffered an early blow after unproductive discussions over his future.

It is understood that club officials met the 27-year-old's representatives last night but that the deal on the table did not come close to meeting the level he considers would make leaving St James' Park worthwhile.

However, while the Ba camp has indicated that the Senegal international does not now expect to be playing his football at Stamford Bridge next month, it is likely that the impasse represents only the initial skirmish in a battle which could run and run.

The Blues are among a series of clubs to have been linked with the former West Ham centre-forward, who scored his 12th and 13th goals of the season at Arsenal on Saturday, with the £7 million release-clause in his contract due to become active once again on Tuesday.

But the Magpies insist they are yet to receive a bid that would trigger that clause. The deal Ba signed when he joined Newcastle during the summer of 2011 was intensely complicated because of the condition of his knee – and they have spent recent months attempting to renegotiate it.

However, the two sides have been unable to reach agreement and with the player's network of representatives clearly active behind the scenes, the waters have become increasingly muddied.

What is clear is that any deal would cost significantly more than £7m when signing-on and agent fees, as well as a lucrative salary, are taken into consideration.

Alan Pardew, the Newcastle manager, is keen to retain the services of a man who scored 16 goals last season, and insists that the player has never given any indication that he would like to leave. However, the prospect of Champions League football and a significantly higher pay deal may yet prove decisive.
