West Ham United vs. Chelsea: The drinking game

146558226

Chelsea are playing a match against West Ham United in something like eleven hours. Matches haven't been very fun of late -- our last win in the Premier League was more than a month ago -- so we decided to change the preview format up a little bit. And by that I mean write down the rules of a West Ham vs. Chelsea drinking game, for Chelsea fans. Here goes.

Drink when...

  • Chelsea 'reset' an attack.
  • Fernando Torres fails to shoot when given the opportunity in the box. If he does take a shot, drink anyway.
  • The defensive players exchange eight or more passes in a row.
  • Aimless Chelsea cross. Double if from Cesar Azpilicueta.
  • You see a closeup of Benitez, Roman Abramovich, or Bolo Zenden.

...and when you hear...

  • 'Rafa' without 'Benitez'
  • 'Abramovich'
  • 'Organised'
  • About Andy Carroll's transfer fee.
  • About Fernando Torres' transfer fee.

Finish your drink when...

  • Chelsea concede.
  • A non-Torres attacking player is taken off for a defensive one while the team needs goals.

Special events

  • 16th minute: Applause. Then drink.
  • Half time: Drink if Chelsea haven't had a significant scoring opportunity. Finish drink if neither team has had a significant scoring opportunity.
  • Full time: Finish your drink. If final score 0-0, pour two more drinks; finish them too.

Stop drinking if...

  • You see Marko Marin. He is a mythical creature and does not actually exist. Clearly you have had too much to drink.

Rafael Benítez: the Chelsea emperor awaiting new clothes

The Spanish manager's face does not yet fit at Stamford Bridge – now it seems his suit doesn't either

Chelsea supporters have already made it abundantly clear that Rafael Benítez's face does not fit at Stamford Bridge, though it now appears neither does his official club suit.

The Spaniard is awaiting delivery of specially made formal wear from Dolce & Gabbana, the European champions' official suit suppliers. On top of that Benítez was criticised on Wednesday by some supporters for wearing an orange tie, rather than one in Chelsea blue, with his own suit while the economic downturn apparently delays delivery of his own clubwear.

"I have paid attention to these little things, and the first tie I wore at the club was blue," he said.

"But, still, I have some problems with the official suit. The Italian style is, well, 'different'. It's really nice, but it's a style for young people, not old people. The Italian style is more for players. They need some time [to supply one that fits] and, now, because of the [economic] crisis, no one has many suits in stock. So they have to make the right one."

West Ham United v Chelsea: Squad sheets

Trips to the Boleyn Ground have represented easy pickings for Chelsea in recent times, with only two points shed in their last six visits. Perhaps that was why Sam Allardyce sounded a note of caution ahead of this derby despite the fact the visitors arrive without a win in six league games and with fans still deeply unsettled by the arrival of Rafael Benítez. "Rafa has already sorted out what was a problem under Roberto [Di Matteo]," said Allardyce, reflecting upon Chelsea's successive goalless draws under the Spaniard. Benítez will continue to juggle his resources, and may rest Oscar as he seeks a win to lance the tension. Dominic Fifield

John Terry may not play until Club World Cup, says Rafael Benítez

• Chelsea captain to miss West Ham and Nordsjaelland games
• Benítez tells Fernando Torres to improve his strength

Rafael Benítez has admitted John Terry could travel to the Club World Cup before making his Chelsea comeback.

The interim manager revealed on Friday that the captain is pushing him to return from the knee injury that has sidelined him for almost three weeks. But the Spaniard is not prepared to risk the defender in Saturday's Premier League game at West Ham United or Wednesday's Champions League clash with Nordsjaelland.

Chelsea have one more match after that before they fly to Japan – where they start their bid to be crowned world champions on 13 December – next weekend's trip to Sunderland.

Asked if Terry could travel without having returned, Benítez said: "Yeah, it could be. It's a question of confidence. When you forget you have that problem in your knee is when you are ready.

"He's pushing – 'I want to be there, I want to be involved' – but still he will need some time. It's a knee, not just a muscle. You have to see the reaction when you turn. You cannot put him in a position where he could get injured again."

Terry has seen only 130 minutes of first-team football since the beginning of October due to a combination of his racism ban and injury. Benítez, however, has been impressed by the 31-year-old's mentality.

He said: "Early this morning, he was in front of me walking on to the pitch and he didn't know I was following him. Three young players were coming along and the way he approached them was quite positive."

Frank Lampard could also travel to the Club World Cup before returning from the calf problem that has ruled him out for more than a month.

Benítez admitted Chelsea had missed their captain and vice-captain, whose absences coincided with the alarming slump that saw Roberto Di Matteo sacked as manager. He said: "You have to analyse what has been happening in the last month, but you can see these players with this character and leadership can be helpful when things are wrong."

Chelsea's five-hour, 21-minute goal drought can be blamed partly on an even longer famine for Fernando Torres, who has found the net only once in almost two months – and that was a fluke. In the Premier League alone, the £50m striker has now gone 10 hours and 49 minutes without scoring, with the arrival of his former manager at Liverpool doing little to improve his fortunes.

Benítez admitted this week that Torres had lost some of the pace that made him one of the best strikers in the world. That prompted the former Olympic 4x100 metres champion Darren Campbell to offer to coach the 28-year-old in the art of sprinting, having worked briefly with the Spaniard last year.

But Benítez, who has prescribed Torres weight-training sessions in order to improve his strength, said: "It's interesting to have different ideas, but we have very good staff here. It's different running and running with the ball on the pitch, 11 against 11.

"[The World Cup-winning manager César Luis] Menotti, a famous Argentinian coach, said a sprinter has to run very fast, and when he reaches the line, he finishes. A striker has to run very fast to get the ball and then his game starts."

Real quote about Fernando Torres: "I’m sure I could fix him."

157088649

Fernando Torres has been very, very bad for Chelsea in his nearly two season with the club. Lately though, he's been even worse than usual. His touch is awful, his shots are weak, his runs are non-existent, and he just looks slow.

Olympic gold medalist sprinter Darren Campbell thinks he can fix the last thing I mentioned, helping Torres regain enough speed to outrun the not so quick James Milner. He had the following to say about Torres' slow motion running on Thursday:

"I’m sure I could fix him. It doesn’t have to be a lengthy process because these guys are already extremely fit. That’s the great thing about working with footballers and rugby players. You’re not having to worry about the base fitness so you just go in and teach the raw speed."

"In the case of Fernando, I think he would also probably need to do a bit of weightlifting as well as the running and the speed drills to put some power back into his muscles. That’s why sprinters lift weights, to gain that explosive speed and power."

"The biggest problem is that when you lose your speed you’re unable to do what you used to be able to do, and so then you start trying harder and harder. But that can be counterproductive."

"If you want to be quick, there’s an element of relaxation that’s involved. You’ve only got to look at Gareth Bale. He runs at high speed but it’s all relaxed and there’s no tension in him. The problem with someone like Fernando Torres is that the harder he tries to find that speed, his efforts are actually detrimental."

I have to admit, he's absolutely correct on most of what he says. Torres does look tight when he runs, and that does slow an athlete down. If Torres was more relaxed in his running mechanics, it's very reasonable to assume he'd be able to regain some of the speed that he's lost over the past several seasons.

Unfortunately, that's probably at least partially the result of his poor movement and reading of the game. Torres is clearly not reading and reacting very quickly right now, and that's likely a large part of the problem with his running. You can't force yourself to be relaxed, and if you're slow to react to things, you're going to try to force things.

Campbell has worked with Torres before, a few sessions shortly before Andre Villas Boas was sacked last season. I can't say I noted an improvement in Torres' play during that spell, but at this point, it just couldn't hurt to try. Anything to get Torres firing at this point would be welcome, so I'd be willing to listen any suggestions. It's sad, but we're honestly to the point where even an injury sustained due to an altered training regime couldn't reduce Torres' value to the club on the pitch.

Josh McEachran wants to stay at Middlesbrough

152038836

Chelsea lack depth in the center of the midfield, and they've got the option to recall Josh McEachran in January should they choose to do so. Given the choice, though, McEachran would prefer to remain with Middlesbrough for the remainder of the season. Here's what he had to say:

"I’ve been at Chelsea since the age of seven and I’ve grown up there. It’s always been my dream to play regular first team football there. But at present, I’d like to stay here for the rest of the season. We’ve got a genuine chance of going up and I want to be part of it. There’s a long way to go this season and a lot could happen but we have a really good manager here and I like the way he wants to play."

I've got mixed feeling on leaving Josh at Boro for the remainder of the year. He's certainly good enough to get some minutes for the club right now, and it's always nice to see homegrown talent getting a chance with the club. On the other hand, Josh is getting valuable minutes in the Championship, certainly more than he'd get at Chelsea.

Recall or not, it's good to see that Josh is enjoying his time on the pitch at Boro and wants to stick with them all the way through their promotion push. That says a lot about him, and I'm ecstatic that he's having such a fantastic season.

Three more Chelsea players set to join Vitesse Arnhem?

144068216

There was an article today in a dutch newspaper suggesting that Chelsea may be sending three more players on loan to Vitesse Arnhem as they continue to challenge for the Eredivisie title*. On the surface, it makes loads of sense. Chelsea have a great relationship with Vitesse, and the Dutch club has been doing an excellent job of providing an opportunity for the kids to get some valuable minutes.

*Big hat tip to Maikel Berends for spotting this and making sure we saw it.

There is a bit of question on this one though, as most of Chelsea's best young players are already out on loan. With that in mind, I thought I'd do a little bit of pondering about just who it is that Vitesse may be taking if this report is accurate:

Currently at Cobham:

As mentioned earlier, Chelsea have already sent most of their better prospects out on loan. There are a trio of guys that are certainly ready to contrinute to Vitesse playing at the U21 level though, and one of them makes a lot of sense. Lucas Piazon would seem to be a perfect fit in this instance. Vitesse have been struggling to score, and Piazon is a promising attacking player.

Opportunity for Lucas to get minutes here would seem slim this spring (especially if we add in January), and the club has certainly shown a willingness to gamble with depth so that youngsters can get some minutes abroad. Piazon seems a near perfect fit for Vitesse, and he's a good enough player to start for them almost immediately.

Billy Clifford and George Saville would both also be nice fits, but being English, I'd be surprised if either was sent to the Netherlands. The club has generally kept their English players at home, which makes sense as they already know the language and culture. They'd both be good fits in terms of talent and style, but neither seem likely to be loaned there.

A bit of a wildcard could be added to this discussion as well. Nathan Ake is dutch, and he's probably ready for a crack at a loan spell. Vitesse would be an extremely aggressive first loan, but if the club felt he's ready to play at that level, it would be a nearly perfect fit. Center back could use some depth for Vitesse if Kalas is going to continue on the right, and Ake is a very good looking prospect.

Wallace is a bit of an interesting guy, as he's probably good enough to contribute there today. With Tomas Kalas playing right back, it would seem a poor fit for us though. Still, Kalas could move back to the center or Wallace could move further up the pitch, and both are good enough players to see regular minutes in those roles. This would seem unlikely, but if Lucas Piazon is sent there it would certainly make a bit more sense culturally.

On loan elsewhere:

Chelsea do have several players on loan that they should probably be thinking of recalling. Whether or not the player fits into the long term plans at Chelsea, getting them the most minutes possible would seem to be a good idea.

Jeffrey Bruma would seem like the name that immediately springs to mind here. Bruma is Dutch, so it will not be a difficult transition culturally. He's been struggling to get minutes at HSV despite looking good when he's on the pitch, and he's certainly good enough to start from day one in the Eredivisie. If we're going to make a move involving Bruma in January, this would make a lot of sense.

Milan Lalkovic would also seem to be a name that makes some sense. Vitesse have been struggling to put the ball in the net, and Lalkovic offers another attacking option. He's a different style of player than what they have now, although I have my doubts if he'd do more than contribute from the bench there. Still, he'd make some sense from either club's perspective, and he's played quite a bit with Patrick van Aanholt and Gael Kakuta in the past.

Other names that spring to mind as possible recalls don't seem to make a ton of sense. None of the goalkeepers will likely become starters at Vitesse, and Ben Gordon would likely never play. Jhon Pirez may actually be a useful backup there, but he's probably better off just left where he is while attempting to get healthy. I suppose it's possible the club could recall Thorgan Hazard to push him into a slightly more competitive league, but that seems like a pretty silly thing to do for me.

Other thoughts:

We've already discussed Wallace, but if Chelsea add any other young talents in January, they could certainly look to send them to Vitesse as soon as they get them to sign on the dotted line. I certainly wouldn't rule out the idea that we have a few of those types lined up already, similar to Kenneth Omeruo last January.

I'd also toss around the idea that Florent Malouda might be a fit. I'm sure the priority of the club would be to sell him, but Vitesse are one of the few places I could see Chelsea sending him on loan while still paying a portion of his wages if a suitor can't be found. He'd almost certainly start from day one, and he'd be a huge addition as they push towards the title. Whether or not Florent would be amicable to this is another matter, but a title push in the Eredivisie is certainly an interesting proposal. It's unlikely, but it's a thought.

I'd certainly buy the idea that we're sending another player on loan to Vitesse, but it's hard to see three current Chelsea players (including Wallace) that would be excellent fits for that club. I watch all of there games anyway though, so from a loan roundup perspective, it would be ideal.

Romeu urges Chelsea to "fight" their way back into form

Oriol Romeu told his Chelsea team-mates they needed to "fight" to shake themselves out of their alarming slump after admitting it had left confidence in short supply.

The European champions stuttered to another 0-0 draw in last night's west London derby with Fulham, their sixth Barclays Premier League game without a win.

It was also their third successive match without scoring and their second straight goalless stalemate, the first time either had happened since Roman Abramovich bought the club. It also made interim manager Rafael Benitez the first boss of the Abramovich era not to win either of his first two games under the Russian, results which saw Chelsea slip seven points behind Manchester United ahead of Saturday's trip to West Ham.

Midfielder Romeu, who made only his third league start of the season last night, told Chelsea TV: "We have to keep going forward, look at the positive things and win the games and fight, fight, in each game.

"When we get the confidence, the goals will go in. I'm sure about that.

"We had two clean sheets after a long time without that happening.

"So, that's a positive thing and the only thing is that, if we score, we can win.

"We are defending well and now we have to think of attack and scoring more goals, for sure."

Romeu was drafted in for John Obi Mikel last night, the former Barcelona youngster adding more quality in possession but without much penetration. The 21-year-old admitted he needed to help Chelsea counter-attack more quickly if they were to create more chances.

"The counter-attack is a good point to kill the opponents and I think we can do it a bit quicker," he said. "And, if we can do it, we can get chances a little bit better.

"So, we will try to improve that point and obviously we have a few more points to get better."

In fairness to Romeu, he has enjoyed only a handful of starts since Andre Villas-Boas was replaced by Roberto Di Matteo back in March, but he said: "I'm young, I'm fit to play 90 minutes, so that's not a problem.

"The only thing you want is to play, no matter how many minutes you are on the pitch."

Chelsea were also not helped yesterday by a sterile atmosphere at Stamford Bridge for Benitez's second match in charge. The fans eventually made their feelings known but it was, predictably, in the form of more hostility towards the former Liverpool boss.

"We have to accept that maybe the supporters are not as happy as we would like," Romeu said. "But we do our job, we have to go out there and win our games."

Doing that involves scoring goals and reports in Brazil today suggested Chelsea were negotiating a move for Metalist Kharkiv striker Taison. The Brazilian forward was said to have travelled to London for talks with the Blues, who were also rumoured to have tracked him previously in the summer.

They did not have to look far yesterday for a striker who could make a difference at Stamford Bridge after Dimitar Berbatov's impudent performance against them. The Bulgarian, who Fulham bagged for a bargain fee from Manchester United this summer, completely outshone opposite number Fernando Torres.

Chelsea On the Verge Of Signing £12m Striker: Forward Watched Blues In Action Against Fulham from the Stands

TaisonStamford Bridge side set to bring in yet another Brazilian.

Robbie Williams tour dates

According to well respected Brazilian source Globoesporte Chelsea are very close to completing a deal to sign Metalist Kharkiv striker Taison.

Indeed the 24 year old forward was reportedly in the stands at Stamford Bridge last night as the West London side registered a second successive blank under new boss Rafa Benitez.

It seems clear that Chelsea need to reinforce a strike-force that relies almost exclusively on off-form Spanish international Fernando Torres. The 28 year old hasn't scored in his last seven Premier League appearances and may well be offloaded if he doesn't hit the type of form one would expect from a £50m signing.

The former Internacional forward is into his third season at Metalist Kharkiv and the adaptable 24 year old has seemingly attracted growing attention with his recent displays.

Taison can play in a number of attacking roles and would join a number of his compatriots with Brazilians David Luiz, Oscar, Ramires and Lucas Piazon already plying their trade at the Premier League club.

Report: Brazilian attacker deep in negotiations to join Chelsea in January

Gyi0063659564

Reports out of Brazil this morning indicate that Chelsea are close to adding yet another Brazilian to their squad. The target in question is a new one, at least as far as the rumor mill is concerned. Supposedly, Taison has flown to London to hammer out the final details of a move to Chelsea, with his Ukranian team now on winter break. The Daily Mail had linked us to Taison once before, setting the rumored transfer fee at £12 million.

Taison is 24 years old, and he currently plays for Metalist Kharkiv. He was one of the better players in the Ukrainian Premier league last season, leading the attack that led to a third place finish for Metalist. He'd cerrtainly be a different sort of player than guys like Jozy Altidore or Bony WIlfried, but he's an interesting option to consider that would likely come at a fairly low price.

Taison is a solid player, but I sincerely doubt that the club is looking at him as a long term starter. Instead, he'd seem a very logical replacement for a guy like Daniel Sturridge, someone that can fill a number of roles for the club and allow us to play several different shapes. I'd be shocked a Taison move ended our pursuit of other center forwards, unless of course the plan (fingers crossed) is to recall Romelu Lukaku. January 1 is coming, so I'd expect the rumor mill to continue pumping out new links. Stay tuned...

Premier League: 10 talking points from the midweek action

Liverpool and Tottenham are entertaining but incomplete, United have as goalkeeper touched with genius on the bench and more
Watch video highlights of all the midweek action (UK only)

1) Work in progress x 2

So much to admire during Wednesday's Tottenham-Liverpool match, yet in a way that added frustration to an at-times thrilling match. Both teams showed lots of qualities yet also betrayed deficiencies that must exasperate their managers: you were left with the impression that with a sprinkling of new players – and Liverpool need more than Spurs – each could be a genuinely excellent team. Brendan Rodgers has shown enough to prove he deserves generous backing in January; Spurs need to show enough to convince Gareth Bale to resist the offers that he will inevitably get. Paul Doyle

2) De Gea v Lindegaard

It might be slightly perverse to question what David de Gea is doing sitting on Manchester United's bench after Anders Lindegaard kept a clean sheet in the 1-0 win over West Ham but let's do it anyway. What is David de Gea doing sitting on Manchester United's bench? De Gea certainly has his faults – especially his ability to deal with crosses – but he pulls off saves that other goalkeepers can only dream of making and has kept United in matches on his own at times this season. Although Lindegaard made a good stop to deny Carlton Cole, he was not overworked by West Ham, whose best efforts mostly went high or wide. The Dane is a good goalkeeper but De Gea is a special one. Jacob Steinberg

3) Pardew needs reinforcements

Mike Ashley needs to speculate to accumulate in January. Alan Pardew remains a fine manager and Newcastle's strongest XI is still very good indeed but their lack of strength in depth has been cruelly exposed by the Europa League, injuries and suspensions. Wednesday night's defeat at Stoke was their fourth in a row and it should serve to highlight the owner's mistake in not allowing his manager to strengthen last summer. A centre half, a right-back, a striker and arguably another midfielder are all needed. Will anyone suitable be available in January though and, if so, will Ashley be prepared to spend? Louise Taylor

4) Berbatov sparkles again for Fulham

A goalless draw that merely increases the sense of anguish at Stamford Bridge might have drawn the focus, but the only endearing memories from this west London derby were actually sparked by Fulham forwards. Dimitar Berbatov glided through this contest with all that classy elegance of old, Martin Jol describing him as "unplayable" and even Rafael Benítez conceding his brilliance. Fulham pulled off a coup in securing him in August as Mousa Dembélé and Clint Dempsey bade farewell. Their gain is the rest of the division's considerable loss. Then there was Kerim Frei, under-used on loan at Cardiff but restored to fitness and back tormenting Chelsea leggy full-backs with his scuttling energy and direct running late on. The Turkey international will surely re-establish himself in the months ahead, and Fulham can prosper this term with the pair in the ranks. Dominic Fifield

5) Benteke looks like a bargain

After so much talk about Darren Bent in the last few days, I thought I'd change the subject … to another Aston Villa centre forward – Christian Benteke. There was a feeling among some that Villa may have paid over the odds for Benteke when they signed the 21-year-old Belgium international for £7m from Genk on deadline day, but the early signs are that the fee represents decent value for money. He has not exactly been prolific – three goals in 11 Premier League appearances is nothing to get carried away with, even if his towering header against Reading on Tuesday night was as impressive as it was crucial, but Benteke's contribution exceeds putting the ball in the back of net. Superb in the air, full of aggressive running and not afraid to put himself about, Benteke is the focal point of Villa's attack and provides a constant outlet. Heaven help Villa if he gets injured. Stuart James

6) Laudrup enjoys the laid-back life

Spare a thought for football managers. They have to look after a squad of 25 players without showing any preferential treatment to their best goalscorer (ask Paul Lambert); they have to win trophies and in a style that pleases their boss (ask Roberto Di Matteo); and they are lined up for the sack by their own fans before they have even managed a game (ask Rafa Benítez). While not dealing with angry fans, players, bosses and journalists, they have to win some football matches. You would think that those few hours a week when their teams take to the field come as a welcome relief. Not so says Michael Laudrup: "It is not often as a manager you can sit and enjoy your team playing. Always during a game there are moments when there are things to improve."

Laudrup was speaking after Swansea's 3-1 win over West Brom, a match that went against type for the winning manager. For the first half at least, Laudrup sat back and enjoyed the game as if he was one of the fans in the stands: "I don't recall the last time I just enjoyed a game like this," he said. "It was a fantastic first half. It was the best I have seen this season and for a long time. All 11 players played one-two touch football and everything was so good. It was great for me to see the players at their best." Paul Campbell

7) Keeping up with Adkins is tough

There was no denying Nigel Adkins' frustration with Paulo Gazzaniga following the Argentinian's failure to keep out Robert Snodgrass's relatively tame free-kick during Southampton's 1-1 draw with Norwich at St Mary's. "It was a bad mistake and he [Gazzaniga] knows he should have saved it," said the Southampton manager, and one can only wonder if he is set to change his goalkeeper yet again. Gazzaniga is the third keeper Adkins has used this season, with Kelvin Davis and Artur Boruc having also been deployed in that position. Davis has started on five occasions in all competitions, Boruc twice and Gazzaniga 10 times, with the later having also kept the club's one and only league clean sheet this campaign in last Sunday's 2-0 victory over Newcastle. He is the man in possession but may now find himself relegated to the bench following his costly error against the Canaries.

Goalkeeper has clearly proved to be a problematic position for Adkins, and while he has defended his changes by claiming it has had the benefit of keeping the three contenders on their toes, the lack of a clear No1 cannot be good for team harmony, particularly given Southampton's problems in defence – they have conceded 31 goals in 14 fixtures, making them the Premier League's most porous team. As a former goalkeeper himself, Adkins surely knows how destabilising it can be for a player in such an exposed position not to have the full backing of his manager, and so, for Southampton's sake, Gazzaniga surely deserves at least one more chance to prove his worth. Sachin Nakrani

8) Mancini can't keep all his strikers happy

"No, no, Mario won't be going anywhere in January," Roberto Mancini said. "He's a top striker and he's important to us." Words are cheap but the Manchester City manager demonstrated his faith in his misfiring striker at Wigan by leaving him on the pitch long enough to score his first Premier League goal of the season. Neither Balotelli nor Sergio Agüero had looked in sparkling form for the first hour, and when the latter was withdrawn with game still scoreless Carlos Tevez and Edin Djeko remained on the bench and Aleksandar Kolarov was sent on. That was quite cool on Mancini's part but he had already made the crucial change, introducing James Milner for the labouring Javi García. Within a matter of minutes Balotelli had opened the scoring leaving Milner to supply the coup de grace. All appears rosy in the City garden apart from Tevez and Dzeko becoming marginalised again. Mancini is bound to have at least one unhappy striker to face down in January. Paul Wilson

9) Who wouldn't want Leighton Baines?

Manchester United for Leighton Baines was a story that made sense, ran all summer but lacked one important ingredient – contact between Manchester United and Everton and/or Baines. That hasn't stopped the link resurfacing ahead of the January window and, given the England international started the season in superb form and has improved, it would be more of a surprise if Sir Alex Ferguson and others were not interested in the Everton defender. Only Chelsea have a left-back to rival Baines in the Premier League and he could be off at the end of the season. Baines was again outstanding in the draw with Arsenal, defensively and as an integral part of the Everton attack. He also played the last 15 minutes with a hamstring strain and will be a major loss for David Moyes if, as expected, he misses the trip to Manchester City on Saturday. Andy Hunter

10) O'Neill needs to look beyond first-choice XI

Has the time come for Martin O'Neill to start rotating his squad? Sunderland's manager likes to place his trust in a small corps of players and field them whenever possible but, after two wins in the last 21 Premier League games, it is maybe time for O'Neill to offer sidelined individuals such as Fraizer Campbell, Connor Wickham, Louis Saha and David Vaughan a chance. The disappointing home 0-0 draw with QPR was blemished by a horrible lack of midfield creativity and, by way of exacerbating Wearside woes, Lee Cattermole could be out until February after sustaining suspected medial ligament damage to a knee. If this is the case the Northern Irishman could do worse than recall David Meyler from a loan stint at Hull. Before he suffered horrific knee injuries of his own Meyler was regarded as arguably the club's brightest central midfield prospect. Louise Taylor
